Maj.-Gen. Lewis MacKenzie is once again making headlines in Sarajevo, where, 18 years ago, he led a United Nations peacekeeping operation that attempted to keep Bosnian Muslims and Serbs from killing each other.

While MacKenzie blamed Muslims for killing Muslims he also considered Serbian shelling of Sarajevo a war crime. But his condemnation was mostly directed at the US:

“There’s more than enough blame to go around for all sides,” he said, adding that if he was called to testify in the Karadzic case, he would not hesitate to lay blame at the former Bosnian leader’s feet. “Of the most serious accusations against Karadzic, I do consider the use of heavy artillery against civilian targets in Sarajevo … to strike fear into the heart of the population to be a war crime.”

But MacKenzie suggested that if fault lies anywhere for sparking Bosnia’s descent into civil war, it lies with the United States.

In 1992, under the auspices of the European Community, the Bosnian Muslims, Serbs and Croats signed a peace agreement, the Lisbon Agreement, in which Bosnia would be carved into ethnic cantons. But according to some accounts, former U.S. ambassador Warren Zimmermann met the Bosnian Muslim president Alija Izetbegovic and told him that if he withdrew from the agreement and unilaterally declared independence, the United States would support him. In effect, Izetbegovic was encouraged to think he would be establishing the first Muslim nation in the heart of Europe.

However, as far as the Bosnian Serbs were concerned, they weren’t going to be ruled by Muslims, who, the Serbs believed, were intent on creating an Islamic fundamentalist state. War was the only alternative once the Bosnian Muslims withdrew from the Lisbon Agreement.

I believe that most Germans are merely naive or ordinary citizens (like this country), but that the powers that be behind the scenes, the real rulers of Germany, are intent on misleading and manipulating the German army and people again to form their final and Fourth Reich, just as Bible prophecy warns.

How did Germany do this when the German constitution forbids it? The United States were useful idiots for Germany and the bloody Vatican under our shameful president, Bill Clinton, and helped to do their dirty work for them in lockstep with NATO (the same NATO/UN/EU forces about to be used and abused in the Middle East, wolves in sheep's clothing, "peacekeepers" with their evil eye on Jerusalem, especially the Temple Mount).

Germany’s chancellor is missing in action.

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel has been strangely absent at a vital time in German politics. This is giving the impression of a leadership vacuum as Germany’s coalition government seems to be coming apart at the seams.

A week ago, the Times Online ran a headline “Iron Lady Angela Merkel vanishes amid trouble home and abroad.” The current edition of the Economist contains an item titled “Waiting for Angela.” Both articles comment on Germany’s chancellor strangely missing from the action while her coalition government is caught in the grip of crisis. As the Economist notes, there is even a comedy playing at a Berlin cabaret theater which has audiences splitting their sides with mirth as actors parody German political party officials rushing about asking each other “where’s Angela?” (January 21).

The Times Online commented, “Angela Merkel, once billed as a kind of Iron Lady, has become the Invisible Chancellor. Even Germans who are usually quite happy to have a non-intrusive, modest head of government, are astonished. There is trouble brewing at home and abroad but the leader of Europe’s biggest economy is distinguished by her absence. … At home, she suddenly looks weak. And abroad, there is a sense that her attention is flagging” (January 25).

Though she briefly popped out of the woodwork last week to declare Germany’s support of sanctions against Iran, even this may work against the chancellor, raising the hackles of some of Germany’s most high-profile corporations that have for years profited from exporting both technology and manufactured goods to Iran. If Merkel follows through with this, it will further strain her relationship with her coalition partner, the business-oriented Federal Democratic Party (FDP).

In a keenly focused view of Germany’s present need for assertive leadership, the Times Online observed, “Ms. Merkel looks more fallible. The first 100 days of her new government have made almost no impact on her countrymen. What is needed now is a shift from passive to active leadership, the kind that governors need in order to demand sacrifice from the governed.”

It’s been a long time since Germany has had such a leader. But an increasingly unsettled feeling has been creeping across the country this winter as Germans pine for more assertive leadership amid the present crisis of government. The once greatest export nation in the world suddenly finds itself knocked into second position by China. Unemployment gradually bites deeper into the German economy in the wake of the global economic crisis. Chancellor Merkel’s reaction to strains on the economy is to push very hard for a German to head up the European Central Bank. But that is not helping her back home.

The Times rightly points to Afghanistan as being one of the major questions on which Chancellor Merkel’s leadership will either wax or wane. Right now it’s on the downside. Roger Boyes of the Times states that “Afghanistan will ultimately determine how history judges Chancellor Merkel. It is a deeply unpopular war. Ms. Merkel has yet to tell the Germans it is a necessary war. Nor has she tried to drum up popular support for the mission of the German troops there. … Ms. Merkel does not know even how to start to be a war leader; there hasn’t been one in modern Germany …” (ibid.).

And that’s the problem. Germans are becoming unsettled once again, and it’s in such situations that they crave strong leadership. Should Merkel not soon be able to pull a few rabbits out of the hat to keep her electorate happy, the outcry could be the kiss of death to her coalition and her leadership.

In the meantime, there is a certain German politician enjoying a high profile and great popularity with the German public who is prepared to state things as they are. He has even broken a postwar taboo in Germany by mentioning the German term krieg (war) in direct association with the Bundeswehr’s engagement in Afghanistan. He is a politician to whom we have devoted much space on this website and in the February edition of the Trumpet magazine. His name is Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg.

The contrast between Guttenberg and Merkel is marked. He is a devoted Roman Catholic, she a somewhat diffident Protestant. He hails from the Bavarian rightist Christian Socialist Union, she from the more centrist Christian Democrats. He is a titled aristocrat, she hails from the working classes of East Germany. He is known for his decisiveness, for taking a position and not backing down easily. She has employed a leadership style which, in the words of Times journalist Boyes, “waited for issues to cluster, tribal rows to reach critical proportions and only then would she intervene.” Added to this is what Boyes terms “a certain furtiveness” in her dealings. Such an approach does not give the impression of strength in times of crisis. Rather, it gives “the impression of weakness” as she has always appeared “slow to deliver an opinion or enter a debate.”

The contrast is particularly marked between Merkel and her charismatic minister of defense when it comes to the issue currently dominating the headlines in Germany—the question of the nation’s involvement in the war in Afghanistan.

Minister of Defense Guttenberg has hardly been out of the headlines since being sworn into office in his current portfolio, completely overshadowing his chancellor and Vice Chancellor Guido Westerwelle in the process. He has been having a field day commanding media attention in Germany over the war in Afghanistan since the Kunduz bombing in September. Be it in Berlin or Washington, on the occasions that he is before the cameras or any audience of note—which is often—his presence is commanding. He certainly does not give an impression of waiting to see how the ball drops before engaging in action. Guttenberg is out front leading and powerfully influencing the debate in Germany on the nation’s foreign-policy question of the moment: Afghanistan.

Those cutting words of Roger Boyes—“Ms. Merkel has yet to tell the Germans it is a necessary war. Nor has she tried to drum up popular support for the mission of the German troops there. … Ms. Merkel does not know even how to start to be a war leader”—are at the nub of German politics and, in particular, Germany’s foreign policy at this particular juncture, 10 years after postwar Germany first sent a military force outside its own borders to participate in war.

Guttenberg has been singularly impressive in doing what no other postwar German defense minister has done. He has quickly demonstrated his willingness to tell the German people that their troops are involved in a necessary war and that he actively seeks popular support for Germany’s combat role in Afghanistan. He has shown, in contrast to his predecessors in the Ministry of Defense, that he knows how to lead the nation as its commander in chief in that war. Not only that, but, at the very time that his chancellor is “missing in action,” he is highly visible. In his most recent press statement, Guttenberg declared that there is no room for failure in Germany’s new approach to the war in Afghanistan, clearly indicating that there may be German casualties in the process (Bild, January 31).

Again, Guttenberg is proving himself quite prepared to work outside his portfolio, recently getting involved in both economic and foreign affairs matters at the recent Davos conference of global movers and shakers. He quite openly upset the German economics minister, Rainer Brüderle, by breakfasting publicly with the chiefs of German corporate giant basf and energy mammoth rwe. This might seem unusual till one realizes that these corporate moguls are heavily engaged in business within Iran. German corporations have a history of being involved in espionage in foreign countries. Any sanctions that Germany lays on Iran would not only potentially harm German business, they could limit the bnd (Germany’s intelligence agency) in keeping tabs on Iran and feeding information of value to the defense minister, especially in relation to Iraq and the war in Afghanistan.

No wonder then that Guttenberg—despite the efforts of his political opponents and liberal elements in the press—remains Germany’s most popular politician. In the meantime, not only has Merkel’s hand been weakened by her absence from the political action, her coalition partner of choice, the fdp, has seen its popularity sink by over 30 percent since last September’s election, placing FDP chairman Vice Chancellor Westerwelle on the back foot.

As Germans worry about a leadership vacuum in the chancellery, continue to watch the rising star of Baron Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg. He may yet fill that gap in the not-too-distant future.

The Real Significance of Angela Merkel’s Speech to U.S. Congress

For only the second time since World War II, a German chancellor has addressed the U.S. Congress. Amazingly, the childish commentators from the popular press ignored the most momentous of Angela Merkel’s statements and zeroed in on a topic that the most astute of climate scientists are increasingly rejecting—the global warming hoax!

Manipulators of public opinion have had a field day using the global warming fear as a smokescreen behind which to hide their true globalist political agenda. This is a reality to which the press and mass media, with few exceptions, remain largely blinded.

It’s time to face up to reality. The real meat was in the main body of Merkel’s speech, not in the global warming smokescreen tagged on the end, though this got the most applause from the Democrat side of the House.

Chancellor Merkel’s address comes at a crucial time in transatlantic relations. The U.S. is in decline politically, economically and financially. The European Union stands on the brink of overnight becoming a giant imperial power, a global power in its own right. In fact, it is becoming the very power that will fill the increasing economic, political and military vacuum being created in the world through America’s decline.

The nation that stands in the lead of the European empire is Germany. As the day approaches for ratification of the treaty that will launch the EU, overnight, as a global player, it is perhaps both a fitting and most historic—let alone prophetic—occasion of huge importance that Washington witnessed today with the German chancellor’s address. Few in that audience would have garnered the truth of the reality America faces, reading between the lines of the chancellor’s speech.

The current year has set a record for the number of EU summits. It seems no sooner is one summit over and we are hearing of the imminent scheduling of another.

Why all the chat in this whirlwind of EU summitry this year? It’s simple. It is time! It’s time for the grand EU design to emerge from behind its facade and finally reveal its true reason for being. And the movers and shakers, the powerfully influential elites who have driven this postwar grand design for Europe thus far, want their enterprise to finally emerge as a powerful global player, not only economically, but politically and, believe it or not, militarily.

The frequency of EU summitry has hinged on the progressive building of a German-dominated imperial power, not by military aggression, but by treaty. Step by step, the European elites have constructed this rising empire by a series of treaties. Each treaty was designed to build upon its predecessor in a process that has taken a simple agreement on access to coal and steel (the treaty of Paris, 1951, that created the European Coal and Steel Community) to rebuild postwar European industry, to its inevitable outcome: a treaty enabling the launching of a powerful pan-European military industry underpinning a powerful imperial military force of global reach.

That old master of international relations, Hans Morgenthau, pointed to industrial capacity as being one of the most important factors underpinning the status of a world power. “[T]he competition among nations for power transforms itself largely into competition for the production of bigger, better and more implements of war,” he wrote in Politics Among Nations. Extrapolating the point, Morgenthau went on to state the logical outcome of this competition for global power. “[A] change in industrial rank, for better or for worse, should be accompanied or followed by a corresponding change in the hierarchy of power.”

The transfer of power that has followed the transfer of industrial capacity, changing the West into major consumers and the East into major producers of goods, is now witnessing a subsequent reduction in power of the previously dominant industrial nations, significantly the Anglo-Saxons, and the rise to power of the world’s major producers, in particular China, Japan, India and a resurrecting Russia.

Perhaps the least understood of all rising industrial powers is the European Union.

People will believe what they choose to believe, regardless of reality. Most choose to believe what is fed to them by the popular press. It has thus played to the huge advantage of the rising European imperial power that it is largely ignored by a poorly educated and largely blind U.S. media machine. While the press and mass media dance to the tune of the liberal socialists’ views on such high-profile stories as the Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, economic “recovery,” and the ever-present, nauseating “celebrity” personalities of the day, the behemoth rises across the Atlantic.

So well-masked has been this resurrection of old “Holy” Roman/Teutonic power that when its reality hits, it will send a massive shock wave through North America in particular. Britain, being much closer geographically to Europe, and now beginning to stand aghast at the degree to which its economy, its political and judicial system have been wrecked by membership of the European Union, at least has an increasing number of sensibly aware voices clamoring for their nation to extricate itself from Brussels/Berlin. Sadly, it’s too late for even such action to have a positive bearing on the state of the British nation.

So drastic is Britain’s economic state (the United Kingdom now being Germany’s largest EU creditor), that its prime minister has announced the fire sale of prime national assets.

Pope Benedict xvi in his recent encyclical “Caritas in Veritate” called for a global order to address the world’s 21st-century challenges. Chancellor Merkel added her voice to that call today, declaring to the joint House of Congress that the solution to the world’s problems was a “global order … under global law.”

Germany and the Vatican have a history of operating in tandem under the facade of the European Union to advance their imperialist agenda for universal government. Now that Czech President Vaclav Klaus has signed the Lisbon Treaty, there remains no known bar to implementation of the imperialist European Constitution by December 1.

During her historic address to the joint houses of Congress in Washington today, Merkel called for the institution of a “global economic order” under “global law.” The request is timely, coming on the eve of the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty/EU constitution, which establishes the EU as a globalist imperial power.

Now that the European Union stands revealed for that which it was always destined to become—a global power—Chancellor Merkel gave more than a strong hint as to what will now become the new pretense under which Berlin and Rome will aggressively move forward in the drive for global economic order. She encouraged the U.S. to join the EU in using the G-20 to achieve this end, a reality that has leaped into focus since the G-20 began imposing its globalist EU-driven agenda on the world after the great Wall Street crash of September 2008.

Watch now for the full ratification of the EU constitution in its guise as the Lisbon Treaty to take place at yet another EU summit slated for either November 12 or 19, the subsequent announcement of the appointment to the newly created positions of EU high representative and the EU foreign minister, and the implementation of the EU diplomatic service on Jan. 1, 2010.

When all that is in place, watch then for the rapid development of the European military force, the most dramatic and most dangerous of all the institutions the new EU constitution embraces.

The world would do well to take warning that Chancellor Merkel’s call for a global order under global regulation is about to become a reality—under initiatives to be enforced by the very nation from which she hails!

As you watch this rapid-fire propulsion of the European empire to global power status, remember the words of Herbert W. Armstrong: “Watch for developments suddenly to speed toward European political and military union, through religious union! … [I]n very few years at most, it must start. And when it does, events will flash by with a lightning speed that will astound the world …. This sudden blitz toward union … once triggered will move so swiftly the whole world will be caught by surprise. Yes indeed! They shall wonder in amazement!” (Plain Truth, November 1965). •

A voice of warning from 1989 is about to prove especially farsighted.

British newspapers jumped on the story when documents were released in September disclosing Margaret Thatcher’s vigorous opposition to German unification in 1989.

In one Kremlin transcript, the former prime minister was revealed as telling Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in off-the-record meetings in September 1989 that the “reunification of Germany is not in the interests of Britain and Western Europe.” While that might appear different from public pronouncements, she stated, Britain does “not want a united Germany.”

It’s not hard to justify the release of these documents as headline news. They shine added light on what was a turning point in modern European history when the Berlin Wall collapsed in November 1989. But the British media and government opted not to report on the most important angle: how Margaret Thatcher’s sober forecasts are actually being fulfilled.

Lampooned!

Among the nuggets the Times latched onto was Mrs. Thatcher’s “bombshell” off-the-record admission to Mr. Gorbachev that while she supported German unification in public, privately she held “deep concerns” about the “big changes” afoot. “Even 20 years later, her remarks are likely to cause an uproar,” wrote the Times.

“Mrs. Thatcher (as she then was) was wrong,” the Times haughtily blurted. “As Germany reaches two decades as a reunited country, its unshakable place within the Western family of democratic nations is cause for celebration. Apprehensions about a united Germany were misguided and have clearly been refuted” (September 11; emphasis mine throughout).

They have? Says who?

The Financial Times reported that the decision by Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office to publish the documents was perceived as an “attempt by Britain to set the record straight and show that its diplomats were positive about reunification early on—in spite of Mrs. Thatcher’s personal misgivings” (September 10). This perception wasn’t inaccurate, as Patrick Salmon, chief historian at the British Foreign Office, confirmed: “What they do is they correct the impression that was around at the time, and later, that Britain was negative toward [German unification],” he said.

Such shallow and misleading representation of these revelatory papers in the British media, as well as by the British government, was a tremendous disservice to the British people, many of whom are upset and disturbed by the German-led EU’s growing impingement on British sovereignty.

The release of these documents provided British politicians and journalists an opportunity to investigate why Thatcher opposed German unification, if her reticence was justified, and whether or not her fears are coming to fruition. However, they used them to court Germany, even though it meant turning their back on their former stalwart leader.

German media picked up the same story line. Germany’s Spiegel Online reported that the “new documents reveal that [British] Foreign Ministry diplomats were considerably more far-sighted than Thatcher, who was led by her gut reaction against Germany” (September 11).

“The long-secret papers show that the British government played a far more constructive role in German reunification than had been previously thought,” Spiegel wrote. “Only one person had serious doubts about the change: Margaret Thatcher.” This is pure revisionist history that belies the concern shared by the most astute observers of Germany’s intentions to dominate Europe by using the European Union.

Thatcher’s Apprehensions

Before we prove whether or not Thatcher’s concerns were justified, we must first understand just what they were. And while the Times and its ilk reported on these documents as if Thatcher’s opposition to German reunification was blockbuster news, history shows it was no state secret.

Mrs. Thatcher openly, eloquently and extensively explained her viewpoint in her 1993 autobiography, The Downing Street Years. Written shortly after the Berlin Wall’s fall, the book gives context to her recently disclosed remarks, which were made in meetings that occurred between 1986 and 1990. Reading Thatcher’s explanation, it’s evident she was not the naive rogue, plagued by a lurking hatred of Germans and totally wrong in her views about German reunification, that some have spun her to be.

Throughout her illustrious political career, 11 years of which she stood tall as Britain’s prime minister, Mrs. Thatcher proved herself an avid student of human nature and an eager disciple of history. Mrs. Thatcher’s viewpoint on the “German question,” as it was known then, was informed by a firm grasp on both history and the human mind.

“I do not believe in collective guilt,” she explained in The Downing Street Years, “it is individuals who are morally accountable for their actions.” Contrary to what some believe, Mrs. Thatcher blamed Hitler primarily for World War II, not the collective German people. “But I do believe in national character,” she continued, “which is molded by a range of complex factors, [and] the fact that national caricatures are often absurd and inaccurate does not detract from that.”

Mrs. Thatcher opposed German reunification because she understood German history and the national character of the German people. “Since the unification of Germany under Bismarck,” she wrote, “Germany has veered unpredictably between aggression and self-doubt.” Study German history since the mid-19th century; it’s impossible to argue with the facts on this point.

The documents released in September also recount remarks Mrs. Thatcher made during meetings with French President François Mitterrand. Mrs. Thatcher had already recalled some of these meetings (and remarks) in her 1993 book. In one meeting in France in 1989, she writes, Mitterrand was “more concerned” about German reunification than she was. The reason for his concern?

“He observed that in history the Germans were a people in constant movement and flux.” Mitterrand’s concern, as well as Thatcher’s—as well as the recorded concerns of other historians, politicians and journalists—shows that, at the time, astute observers were leery of a repeat of German dominance in Europe.

Now notice Thatcher’s reaction to Mitterrand’s anxiety. At that moment, she writes, “I produced from my handbag a map showing the various configurations of Germany in the past, which were not altogether reassuring about the future.” Thatcher was so devoted to history as her tutor, she actually carried it around with her in her purse.

That’s what informed her opposition to German reunification!

Because she was familiar with Germany’s historical proclivity to dominate Europe, Mrs. Thatcher warned often that it would be dangerous to lock a reunited Germany into a federal Europe. “Germany is more rather than less likely to dominate within that framework,” she explained, “for a reunited Germany is simply too big and powerful to be just another player with Europe.”

Thatcher feared German reunification because she knew it would wreak havoc on Europe’s political landscape. “Germany is … by its very nature a destabilizing rather than a stabilizing force in Europe,” she wrote. This reasoning underpinned Thatcher’s remark to Gorbachev that “Britain did not want a united Germany.”

In her book, Mrs. Thatcher explains the apprehensions she had about German unification in three succinct points. First, a united Germany would rush Europe toward becoming a dominant federalist power. Second, although Europe might at first be led by a Franco-German axis, Germany would in time marginalize French leadership and become the unchecked leader of Europe. Third, a united Germany would facilitate the decline of America’s presence and influence in Europe.

The British press failed to do this in reporting this story, but you can: Consider the past 20 years of European history, and specifically that of the EU. Has Germany emerged at the vanguard of efforts to forge the European Union as a federalist superpower? Indisputably. Has Germany overpowered and outmaneuvered France to become the predominant, unbridled leader of Europe? Without doubt. And has America’s presence and influence in Europe deteriorated in the shadow of Germany’s mounting and formidable presence? Undeniably.

Historical fact refutes the Times’ assertion that Thatcher’s “apprehensions about a united Germany were misguided and have clearly been refuted.” In fact, Britain’s “Iron Lady” was spot on!

Vindication

If we view them objectively, the documents released in September vindicate more than condemn Mrs. Thatcher. That vindication, at least partially, comes with the knowledge that fellow world leaders had similar fears and opinions about German reunification.

The documents reveal President Mitterrand telling Thatcher that a united Germany could “make even more ground than had Hitler.” If Germany expanded, he said, then Europe would be in the same position that it had been in before World War I. He also said that reunification could turn Germans into the “bad” people they used to be.

They also show Nikolai Ryzhkov, the premier of the Soviet Union, telling Gorbachev that if Germany was allowed to reunify on its own terms, “then in 20 or 30 years Germany will start another world war.”

Jacques Attali, adviser to the French president, was equally concerned. He told a Gorbachev aide that French leaders questioned whether Russia’s lack of interference in the fall of the Berlin Wall meant that “the ussr has made peace with the prospect of a united Germany and will not take any steps to prevent it.” He said, “This has caused a fear approaching panic.” Attali later told Mitterrand that he was so fearful of a united Germany that, should it come to pass, he would “fly off to live on Mars.”

These documents reveal that Mrs. Thatcher was far from alone in her apprehensions; they actually justify her concerns as legitimate. It is true that these leaders mostly gave up their concerns after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Courageously, Britain’s Iron Lady didn’t. “You have not anchored Germany to Europe,” she warned America during a conference in Colorado Springs in October 1995. “You have anchored Europe to a newly dominant, unified Germany. In the end, my friends, you’ll find it will not work.”

As the Trumpet has explained extensively in recent issues, the “end” that Mrs. Thatcher mentioned is very nearly here. Germany is united and strong, and has cemented itself as the most powerful and dominant force, politically, economically and militarily, on the Continent. Soon, perhaps in a matter of months, Germany will impose its authority and power over Europe beyond what most people can readily imagine.

Prophecies in Daniel chapters 8 and 11 reveal that, in addition to revolving around Germany, end-time events in Europe will be heavily dominated by a single individual, and a man of German descent. This man will have a “fierce countenance,” which means he will be unyielding and merciless. The Bible says he will understand “dark sentences,” which, most commentaries agree, means he will conceal his true motives.

He will be skilled in intrigues, deceit, double-talk and double-dealing. He will rule with terrifying cruelty, just like his predecessor Antiochus Epiphanies, the second-century b.c. Greek king who slashed and slaughtered his way into Jerusalem before ransacking the Jewish temple and murdering Jews.

“Through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand,” Daniel writes, “and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand” (Daniel 8:25). The word craft means fraud. The expression “by peace he shall destroy many,” wrote Gerald Flurry, “means he is pretending ‘peace’ and friendship. Then suddenly comes the malignant shock! He destroys suddenly while his enemy is in this state of mind. This illustrates the deceitful malice practiced by this political tyrant” (Trumpet, June 1999).

Don’t be too quick to discount that forecast. It is rooted in historical fact and biblical prophecy. It will—together with Margaret Thatcher’s spirited warnings—be vindicated by the blood, sweat and tears caused by the soon-coming emergence of a German-led European empire. •

September is jam-packed with events of significance to observers of Germany’s rise to global power.

A week ago, both candidates for the chancellorship, incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, received a shock. The largely state-controlled media had been singing a song of praise to Merkel, claiming that she was a shoo-in for regaining the chancellorship following the upcoming September 27 federal elections. But last weekend, both candidates lost support following state elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Saar. All polled increases in the vote for minority parties, with Merkel’s Christian Democrats and Steinmeier’s Social Democrats losing support in the process.

On Tuesday, Time commented (emphasis mine),

Now German politics is no longer dominated by the two big parties—the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats—with the kind of stable two-party coalitions that were typical of West Germany. The political game is much more open, with at least five parties vying for power and reflecting the much broader spectrum of political opinion in the population. This seemingly unstable coalition system is the new normal. … According to opinion polls, Chancellor Angela Merkel seemed to be coasting to victory in September—but now the race seems more uncertain than ever. Her cdu party lost its absolute majority in Thuringia and Saar and may lose power altogether to three-party left-leaning coalitions in those states. In Saxony, the cdu and fdp [Free Democratic Party] govern together and were reelected—but for the first time in a German state parliament, a neo-Nazi party, the npd, kept its seats.

With the September 27 federal election now wide open, the left-wing daily Tageszeitung observed, “The only thing that is certain is that nothing is certain” (August 31).

For some time the Trumpet has been monitoring the run-up to this important German election. We have done so fully expecting a result at odds with the predictions of the pundits, who had confidently said Angela Merkel would win in a trot. All of a sudden, barely a month away from the election, the whole complexion of the scenario is changing. This German election could turn on a dime.

That one or more of the larger parties must figure in a coalition government is a given. Yet which one of the major parties will be the one casting around to cobble together Germany’s next governing coalition is anyone’s guess at this juncture, just as much as is the question of which minority parties will be included.

There’s no doubt that the global financial crisis will have significant influence on how people vote. Yet two burning issues could weigh heavily on the outcome, should certain influential German elites play their cards right.

To read current German politics, one must read European energy politics.

To read Germany’s longer-term political vision, one must read the history of Imperial Germany.

Dealing with the question of energy politics, one must ask, why are ex-Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and his ex-foreign minister, Joshka Fischer, embedded as senior executives in major Russian gas pipeline projects? There’s more to this than meets the eye.

Schröder and Fischer are part of a veritable rogues gallery of German leaders who carry significant behind-the-scenes influence on German elites, in particular within the institutions that are most influential in the German bureaucracy, banking and big business.

Schröder, Fischer, the current German foreign minister, Steinmeier, and his party deputy, Franz Muntefering, all form a formidable force behind the scenes in German politics. This is more so the case when one considers that they each have a cozy relationship with Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, with whom Chancellor Merkel has been particularly at odds during her term as Germany’s leader.

These four form a powerful cabal of resistance to Chancellor Merkel in her drive to retain the leadership in Germany. Given the right publicity, if Steinmeier chooses to play the energy card in a manner that convinces the public that his connections would more strongly mitigate any further threat of a winter freeze due to Russia turning off the gas tap to Europe—as has happened thrice in the past—he could quickly make up for his present lagging poll ratings.

Both Steinmeier and Putin hail from their respective nations’ spy networks, Steinmeier having headed Germany’s BND for the Schröder government and Putin being an ex-KGB agent. Steinmeier’s clandestine connections give him powerful unseen political clout of a nature not possessed by Chancellor Merkel. Polls notwithstanding, the uncharismatic Steinmeier may still give his boss a good challenge should he elect to press the right energy buttons.

But it is in considering the question of Germany’s long-term vision that we depart from most observers of the present political scene in Germany. Here we have to look to the German elites who have held this vision for generations, and passed it on through the gentlemen’s club of the German/Austrian hierarchy. These individuals have sought by various means over the past century—primarily financial, trade and the economy, then ultimately by military force—to bring their dream of European hegemony, if not global dominance, into being.

Recently our representatives in the United Kingdom interviewed Edward Spalton, chairman of the Euroskeptic group Campaign for an Independent Britain. Mr. Spalton is one of a number of Euroskeptics with whom we have had an association over the years. He and other Euroskeptic activists such as Rodney Atkinson, the late Norris McWhirter, Adrian Hilton and Britain’s oldest active member of the Conservative Party, Harry Beckough, have been deeply concerned at the political road being taken by Germany.

In response to the question, “Is Germany’s increasing assertiveness in dominating EU politics a result of deliberate intent or happenstance?”, Mr. Spalton responded:

Well, I think you only need to consult General De Gaulle on that, because when he met Dr. Hallstein, who was the first president of the EU Commission, he said, “If Dr. Hallstein is a sincere European, it is because he is first and foremost an ambitious German.” And then he went on to elaborate how through the EU, Germany would first of all rehabilitate itself in the eyes of other European countries, would gather together a constellation of other European powers who would assist Germany in regaining its unity. And indeed, that has come to pass.

And it has come to pass exactly as that wily old German politician of another generation, the Bavarian Franz Joseph Strauss, outlined it should in his book The Grand Design.

Elaborating on the long-term imperial vision that has dominated German politics over the past two centuries, Edward Spalton continued:

We have to remember that the idea of a common market, a customs union, was actually the way that Germany itself came into being, and as long ago as the 1830s and ’40s when Germany was still divided up into a large number of small states, there were economists and politicians who were clamoring to remove the customs barriers between the grand duchy of this and the elector of that so that the German economy could develop. … So, they did see the development of the common market, the EEC, very much in the same way as the history of the development of Germany itself as a political entity.

This is history of which the general public in the Anglo-Saxon nations remains largely ignorant and certainly quite disinterested, most particularly in the U.S. Yet it is a history that is about to slam the Anglo-Saxons smack in the face. A very few of the most astute observers of Germany see it, and given the history, fear the outcome of the political, economic and military direction that Germany is increasingly and assertively taking. But few there be indeed who can see the clear vision of biblical revelation which declares that the nation of Germany is rapidly returning to head up a final resurrection of the “Holy” Roman Empire.

Current German politics are leading very directly to that outcome, believe it or not!

You need to watch Germany. Most particularly you need to watch Germany over the next two months. A concentration of high-powered events that will convene in September may well consummate by the end of October in the consolidation of Germanic power at the head of the greatest single trading and political entity in the world.

To follow this trend, watch the outcome of each of the following events:

September

2: EU finance ministers meet in Brussels with central bankers to firm up a unified proposal for global regulation in preparation for mounting a solid unity bloc at G-2O summit.

4: EU foreign ministers meet in Strasbourg to discuss common defense and security policy and EU military involvement globally.

4-5: G-20 finance ministers and central bankers meet in London to discuss the global economic and financial crisis.

8: The Lisbon Treaty bill gets its second reading in the Bundestag.

15: The UN General Assembly meets under President Obama as rotating president of the Security Council for this month—to consider Middle East peace process.

17: The EU convenes an “extraordinary” heads of state meeting in Brussels to establish a unified position to address the upcoming G-20 summit.

18: The Bundesrat is scheduled to approve the Lisbon Treaty.

24-25: The G-20 holds a summit in Pittsburgh.

27: Germany holds federal elections.

October

2: Ireland votes on the Lisbon Treaty.

29-30: The EU Council meets to choose who will fill the two new and most senior posts in the EU, created by the Lisbon Treaty: minister of foreign affairs and president of the European Union.

All the while during my six and a half hours of Israeli interrogation, I clearly warned them that the "peace process" is a trap; that it's about to blow up in their faces, and that a German-led Europe is going to wage a New Crusade to enforce the Vatican's version of peace. Catholic Europe will backstab and betray both the Arabs and the Jews. They'll push for Jerusalem to become "an international city," all under the cover of UN Resolution 181.

I maintained that the only explosives that I'm involved with is the bombshell I've written, Beyond Babylon: Europe's Rise and Fall. I continually referred them to it, stating that's where my beliefs are on public record. (Later I gave them a computer disk with my book on it to assist their investigation). I told them I know that Israel won't take G-d's warning seriously, any more than those Jews who spurned Jabotinsky's efforts to save them from Hitler. (Ze'ev Jabotinksy warned the Jews of Hitler's fury but they thought he was just crying wolf). Nevertheless, the Almighty will intervene and save us after our worst time of suffering, if we so insist, and every survivor in Jerusalem will be holy.

Will the Atlantic Times address the German threat?

Congratulations to The Atlantic Times on its first-anniversary issue!

As reported by "This week in Germany," the English-language paper was launched "to stop the drifting apart of Europe and America, and especially Germany and America … and to build on common ground while learning to live with our differences," said the paper's executive editor, the renowned journalist Theo Sommer...the paper has featured scores of articles by prominent leaders and experienced journalists from both sides of the Atlantic..."Our basic message, in print and online, has been, and will be: We are still friends, and we must remain friends," said Sommer. "So let us not confront each other with swollen necks, but let us reason together."

Noble aims that are praiseworthy indeed! Mr. Theo Sommer is definitely to be commended for his efforts. However, based upon the stark testimony of the two witnesses of history and the Bible, Germany and the United States are going to continue to have some very serious disagreements that will ultimately destroy our friendship, alienate our countries and find Germany leading the European Union in a blitzkrieg nuclear attack against the United States!

Before that horrifying "Time of Jacob's Trouble," "the Great Tribulation," the British-Israelites will trust the Assyrian-Germans with their security! Our Anglo-Saxon-Celtic fools will increasingly rely on blind alliances with Germany and Europe that will be broken to pieces like so much shattered crystal!

Herbert W. Armstrong, chancellor of Ambassador College and founder of the Worldwide Church of God and editor-in-chief of The Plain Truth magazine and broadcaster of The World Tomorrow radio and television program, warned the world for years that a European combine, driven by Germany, would thresh the nations. He dared to make such bold proclamations when Germany was in rubble after WWII and divided.

Germany is destined to lead the European Union against the American, British and Jewish peoples, a divine instrument to punish us for our intolerable sins that rise up against Heaven (not that they're without sin):

It is not in Germany's mind today, or its present peaceful people, to wage war against us, but that will all change overnight, after a head-on collision with the Islamic leader of a confederation of Muslim states, their mahdi, whetting Europe's appetite for more blood and morphing the EU into THE BEAST. They will destroy all Muslim opposition with a vengeance.

Whereas most Germans are not aware of vile intentions of influential Germans under Jesuit influence to revive the unholy Roman Empire of the German Nation, the Fourth Reich, to embark on a new crusade into the Middle East, Beyond Babylon: Europe's Rise and Fall bares their grand design before the world: the German-Assyrians will strike again!

The Atlantic Times, regardless of whether or not they believe any of this prophetic scenario possible, owes it to their readers to address this issue that is most serious to a growing number of Bible-believing Christians and many Jews. Can we trust them to deliver?

Why Europe Is Furious With Germany

Germany is stonewalling attempts to rescue Europe’s collapsing economies. What is Berlin’s motivation?


Boneheaded.

That’s how Paul Krugman, this year’s distinguished Nobel Prize laureate for economics, defined Germany’s response to Europe’s financial crises. Krugman is part of a vast chorus of economic gurus, journalists and politicians disgusted and enraged at Berlin.

“For the first time in my life, I am starting to feel twinges of anti-German sentiment,” Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, international business editor for the Daily Telegraph, wrote on Monday. “[E]ven Teutophiles who think that Germany has played an enlightened role for 60 years are losing patience with the antics of the finance ministry and Bundesbank, and with the DICTATORIAL TURN in Berlin’s EU strategy” (emphasis mine throughout).

European politicians are similarly enraged.

“France is working on it and Germany is thinking about it,” French President Nicolas Sarkozy jabbed recently in reference to Berlin’s sloth-like approach to solving Europe’s economic crisis. German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s habit of shooting down rescue efforts for Europe’s crashing economies has earned her the nickname Madame Non in France; in Britain, Frau Nein.

Across Europe, the impression is that Germany is fiddling while the Continent is burning.

Britain’s frustration with Berlin boiled over early last week when, ahead of Thursday’s EU summit in Brussels, Prime Minister Gordon Brown snubbed Merkel and invited only Sarkozy and José Manuel Barroso to London for pre-summit economic discussions. Press releases that claimed the snub was unintentional and denied reports of a rift in the EU were taken with a grain of salt. As Spiegel Online reported Thursday of last week, “Growing annoyance with Germany inside the European Union had hardly been the best kept secret in recent weeks.”

What’s going on? Why is nearly every European state furious at Berlin? More importantly, why is Germany stonewalling Europe’s rescue efforts? What does Germany expect to gain by infuriating its neighbors and isolating itself from the rest of Europe?

Europe’s economic chaos has received sparse coverage in America. That’s understandable: It’s hard to pay attention to the house burning across the street when your own house is going up in flames. Nevertheless, the economic fires roasting Europe’s economies are as deadly as those ravaging America’s economic house. In December, Europe’s manufacturing and service industries contracted at the fastest pace in a decade or more. Payrolls are falling. Consumer and executive confidence dropped last month to the lowest level in 15 years. Industrial production plummeted the most since 1993. Half of EU member states are running budget deficits; most others are right on the fence, and quickly eating into surpluses. Social unrest is now a reality, and the recent riots in Greece are fundamentally a result of Greece’s bankrupt economy and the government’s inability to solve its financial troubles. The Greeks are not alone; with recession striking Continent-wide, similar economy-precipitated crises are smoldering, particularly in Spain, Portugal and Eastern Europe.

Europe’s leaders are alarmed and scrambling to douse the flames. The problem lies with someone who is stalling these rescue efforts. Europe’s largest, most influential and best-positioned national economy disagrees with how its counterparts—particularly France and Britain, in addition to the European Commission—plan to put out the fires.

While London, Paris and Brussels seek the flamboyant American-style quick-fix, billion-dollar-bailout/stimulus-package approach, Berlin views that as reactionary and potentially dangerous. Instead of further rupturing national budgets by borrowing billions and haphazardly throwing money at the problem, Germany believes the bona fide solution lies in sound, cautious fiscal management that will solve the root cause of the problem.

“At a time when the global benchmark for decisive leadership boils down to the number of zeros that are attached to economic stimulus packages,” reported the New York Times Tuesday, “Germany has taken a different path.” Chancellor Merkel highlighted that path during a recent speech in the German region of Swabia, where she “lambasted the bailout mentality gripping Western leaders and lauded financial discipline, balanced budgets and the ethic of thrift …” (Washington Times, December 14). Every Swabian housewife knows the root cause of this crisis, she said: “You can’t keep on living beyond your means. … We are not going to participate in this senseless race for billions. We have to have the courage to swim against the tide.” Merkel was insinuating that German housewives know more about the cause of the economic crises than some European leaders.

Talk about bold.

Recently, Germany’s feisty finance minister, Peer Steinbrück, set off sparks during an interview with Newsweek. When asked what was wrong with the stimulus proposals being bandied about by Europe’s leaders, Steinbrück denounced the plans and said that the “speed at which proposals are put together under pressure that don’t even pass an economic test is breathtaking and depressing.” That was before the EU summit in Brussels where Europe’s leaders agreed to ignore EU rules limiting government borrowing and debt and decided to inject €200 billion, or 1.5 percent of the bloc’s gross domestic product, into European economies to bolster growth.

During the interview, Steinbrück specifically excoriated Britain for a recent tax cut: “Our British friends are now cutting their value-added tax,” he said. “We have no idea how much of that stores will pass on to customers. Are you really going to buy a DVD player because it now costs £39.10 instead of £39.90? All this will do is raise Britain’s debt to a level that will take a whole generation to work off.” Steinbrück called Britain’s efforts to kick-start its economy “crass Keynesianism,” in reference to the famous British economist who believed nations should spend their way out of recession.

Experts say that the German finance minister’s caustic swipe, aside from sparking outrage in Britain and being undiplomatic and divisive, also undermined the British pound and was designed to sap global confidence in the British government and economy. “The recession [in Britain] looks to be deeper than predicted,” wrote Philip Stephens in the Financial Times. He added,

[T]he last thing Mr. Brown’s government needs is a further weakening of confidence in sterling assets among international investors. IT SCARCELY HELPS TO HAVE GERMANY'S FINANCE MINISTER DECLARE THAT BRITAIN'S STRATEGY AMOUNTS TO "CRASS KEYNESIANISM." … [The danger] has always been that international investors—in British government bonds, in particular—will take fright. MR. STEINBRUCK SEEMS TO BE EGGING THEM ON IN THAT DIRECTION.

Were Steinbrück’s remarks a direct attack on one of Germany’s largest competitors in the European Union? Of course they were! Why? Because, as Evans-Pritchard put it on Monday, there has been a “DICTATORIAL turn in Berlin’s EU strategy.”

“[Y]ou can’t have a coordinated European effort if Europe’s biggest economy not only refuses to go along, but heaps scorn on its neighbors’ attempts to contain the crisis,” writes Paul Krugman.

Let’s not misunderstand. It’s not that Germany is not unwilling to deal with the economic chaos. Berlin has already passed a $31 billion economic package of its own—while still managing to balance its budget—and announced earlier this week that it is considering another stimulus package, to be released after the inauguration of Barack Obama. Over the past few days especially, it seems the Continent-wide uproar has caused Berlin to slightly soften its opposition to the let’s-slash-interest-rates-and-taxes, leverage-ourselves-to-the-hilt-and-pump-piles-of-money-into-our-economies approach to Europe’s economic crises.

Despite its relative softening, however, the German government still doesn’t believe that slashing taxes or handing out vouchers to promote spending are the primary solutions. Earlier this week, Merkel said that any stimulus package put forward will largely involve injecting money into the German economy by tackling infrastructure projects and promoting public works. Germany remains staunch in its refusal to bankrupt itself by injecting money into the failed economies of other European states.

But not everyone is furious at Berlin. Fiscal conservatives are praising Germany for its sound economic reasoning. “Germany is seemingly in good shape to weather the downturn,” wrote the Washington Times on Sunday, and is “in a better position than other nations such as the UK, Spain, Italy and France, for example, which have strained their budgets in attempting to stimulate the economy.” The Times concluded:

In the headlong rush to find an economic panacea, Mrs. Merkel is among few Western leaders keeping a cool head. As the EU moves forward on the Eastern Partnership and other platforms, she must continue to stand firm against the pressure to leverage Germany’s—and Europe’s—future with government bailout schemes.

It seems that Germany is giving the world a lesson in how it believes economic crisis ought to be handled! But we ought to dig a bit deeper to discern the true motives behind the German government’s resistance to the general stance of the rest of the EU on priming the pump of the European economies.

When it comes to economic management, the Germans are nearly the opposite of profligate Americans and some of their European counterparts. Where Americans want to spend their way out of a crisis, Germany prefers to save its way out. In general, the German national character is among the most thrifty, efficient and hard-working in the world. That’s partly why the German government abhors ridiculous spending and massive deficits. Even now, for example, Germany has a current account surplus of 7 percent of its GDP.

The prudent and thrifty national character of the German people is surely a reason for Germany’s fervent opposition to Europe’s rescue plan. But it’s not the PRIMARY REASON!

History shows that Germany has a frightening tendency to exploit a crisis. In fact, as British political commentator Rodney Atkinson once told the Trumpet, “THE GERMAN IS EXPERT IN CREATING A CRISIS, THEN POSING THE SOLUTION, WITH AN OUTCOME DESIGNED TO FURTHER HIS OWN ENDS.”

That’s what is now occurring in Europe!

Berlin’s stalling tactics are intensifying Europe’s economic crises. Europe-wide cooperation is essential if Europe’s bailouts and stimulus packages are to work. “[I]f Germany, the largest economy, refuses to go along,” Krugman said in an interview with Spiegel, “there will be no cooperation. EVENTS HAVE GIVEN GERMANY A STRATEGIC POLICY IMPORTANCE DISPROPORTIONATE TO ITS SIZE.”

This is a time-tested principle of European politics: GERMANY IS CREATING A CRISIS WITH THE INTENTION OF POSING A SOLUTION THAT WILL FURTHER ITS OWN ENDS! By hijacking Europe’s plans to rescue its economies, Germany is essentially DICTATING EUROPEAN ECONOMIC POLICY! Of course Berlin realizes it is infuriating its European neighbors. That doesn’t matter to it, because at the end of the day, whether European states like Berlin or not, this financial crisis will cause Europe to increasingly look to and rely on Germany as the savior of Europe!

Watch Germany. Watch Europe. Berlin’s strategy to establish itself as the leader of Europe is well underway—AND THERE'S PLENTY MORE GROUND TO COVER! To properly understand what’s going on in Germany and in Europe, we must not only set our gaze on current events happening on the Continent, we must also set our minds on both history and Bible prophecy. This is what Christ meant when He said in Luke 21, “Watch and pray.” Watching world events will not save a person from the impending disaster. Our watching must be done in the context of urgent prayer and in-depth Bible study.

Actually, effective watching—that which leads a person to being so moved by the danger of the times in which he lives that he feels impelled to seek after God—is a function of prayer and how well a person knows the Bible and God’s prophecies regarding end-time events. The Russo-German Plan to Dismantle NATO

Growing cooperation between Moscow and Berlin is undermining the influence and credibility of arguably the most important security organization in modern history.

Within days of Russia’s invasion of Georgia in early August, our editor in chief, Gerald Flurry, told students at Herbert W. Armstrong College that he believed Moscow had struck a deal with Germany over Georgia before it attacked. After delivering that message to the students, Mr. Flurry wrote in the October issue of the Trumpet, “I believe Germany may well have been complicit in Russia’s plan to attack Georgia!”

That analysis was bold and unique. At the time, there were no media reports suggesting behind-the-scenes dealings between Moscow and Berlin. Since then, however, a pile of evidence has emerged (read this, for example) pointing to a growing cooperation between Russia and Germany.

Some of the strongest evidence of a growing Russo-German partnership came earlier this month. On October 2, German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev in St. Petersburg. Among other topics, the two leaders discussed Germany’s position on NATO, particularly the American-led efforts to welcome Ukraine and Georgia into the ailing organization. Speaking at a press conference after the meetings, Chancellor Merkel left little doubt as to where Germany’s allegiance lies. She told reporters that the German government patently objects to NATO membership for both counties—and even opposes placing either Georgia or Ukraine on the path to membership.

This announcement was not insignificant, for NATO or for America. Since NATO operates on consensus, and any member nation can effectively block potential candidates from membership, Merkel’s rejection severely undermines NATO plans to expand. It also undermines America’s geopolitical strength, which is often manifested through that organization.

But Germany and Russia’s crafty assault on NATO and America didn’t end there. During the meetings, the topic most intensely discussed was the idea of a “new collective security agreement between Europe and Russia, dubbed Helsinki II” (Stratfor, October 2). That’s important: Europe’s largest and most influential nation is not only backing Kremlin efforts to undermine the premier Western security alliance, it is actively seeking to form a new strategic alliance with the Russians!

The new geopolitical reality is that Germany fears Russia more than it fears the United States!

The timing of a Helsinki II agreement is beyond coincidental. Stratfor continued (emphasis mine throughout):

The so-called Helsinki II pact would echo the Helsinki agreement in 1975 that entailed closer relations between Europe and the Soviet Union. The agreement emerged at a time when the United States appeared weak after being tied down in Vietnam, and European politicians were experimenting with “ostpolitic,” a tactic of seeking rapport with the Soviets.

As was the case with the first Helskinki agreement, America’s geopolitical impotence lies at the foundation of German (and eventually European) efforts to form a new strategic partnership with Russia!

Germany’s decision to reject American interests and side with Russia on the nato issue is of “great significance,” wrote Stratfor founder George Friedman last week. Merkel, remember, is the most pro-American politician in Germany and the most pro-American German chancellor in nearly 20 years. Moreover, as Friedman noted, as an East German she has an inherent unease about Russia. Yet, despite all this, she still chose Russia over the United States.

Why?

The first reason is simple. Germany relies heavily on Russian energy, and with the cold months approaching, it would be foolish to irritate a key energy supplier.

But there was more to Germany’s decision than gas. Friedman observed, “Germany views the U.S. obsession with NATO expansion as simply not in Germany’s interests” (October 6). He continued:

First, expanding NATO guarantees to Ukraine and Georgia is meaningless. NATO and the United States don’t have the military means to protect Ukraine or Georgia, and incorporating them into the alliance would not increase European security. From a military standpoint, NATO membership for the two former Soviet republics is an empty gesture, while from a political standpoint, Berlin sees it as designed to irritate the Russians for no clear purpose.

Next, were NATO prepared to protect Ukraine and Georgia, all NATO countries including Germany would be forced to increase defense expenditures substantially. This is not something that Germany and the rest of NATO want to do.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Germany spent 1945 to 1992 being the potential prime battleground of the Cold War. It spent 1992 to 2008 not being the potential prime battleground. Germany prefers the latter, and it does not intend to be drawn into a new Cold War under any circumstances. This has profound implications for the future of both NATO and U.S.-German
relations.

What does all this mean?

It means Germany is in the midst of a “strategic crisis in which it must make some fundamental decisions” (ibid.). The Germans are right now deciding their future. Should they remain an ally of the U.S.? This would mean maintaining their support for America’s foreign-policy objectives, which include expanding NATO and increasing the alliance’s military presence on Russia’s doorstep—a move that would assuredly infuriate the Russians.

Germany’s other option is to realign itself with the newly resurgent Moscow. This option is infinitely more appealing right now, because while upsetting America is not ideal, it comes with far fewer risks than upsetting the feisty behemoth next door.

Friedman continued,

If Germany were to join those who call for NATO expansion, the first step toward a confrontation with Russia would have been taken. The second step would be guaranteeing the security of the Baltics and Poland. America would make the speeches, and Germans would man the line. After spending most of the last century fighting or preparing to fight the Russians, the Germans looked around at the condition of their allies and opted out.

The Germans saw what happened in Georgia in September. They know that Russia is in the mood for confrontation. They recognize that now is a time to cajole the Kremlin, not confront it. And they know that any benefit that might come from maintaining the support of America will be far outweighed by the repercussions that would come from annoying the Russians.

“Everything in German history has led to this moment,” Friedman concluded. “The country is united and wants to be secure. It will not play the role it was forced into during the Cold War, nor will it play geopolitical poker as it did in the First and Second World Wars. And that means NATO is permanently and profoundly broken.”

Think about that. This respected analyst recognizes that a growing Russian-German relationship signifies that NATO—arguably the defining security organization in modern history, and a key geopolitical instrument of the United States—is now permanently and profoundly broken.

For years the Trumpet has forecast the demise of nato as an influential American-led organization.

When Russia invaded Georgia on September 8, NATO’s demise grew nearer. Since then, the steady flow of evidence pointing toward an improving Russo-German relationship, which is largely founded on an anti-NATO platform, indicates that NATO’s demise is inevitable.

Russia and Germany are cunningly undermining and systematically dismantling NATO!

The demise of this American-led security alliance, the rise of a resurgent Russia, the newly forming European superpower, and the imminent emergence of a new Russo-German pact all are evidence that a major shifting of geopolitical tectonic plates is currently under way. The Trumpet stands by its warnings of recent weeks: Watch Russia and Germany closely!

History shows that the formation of a strategic pact between Russia and Germany—which these two nations are forming right now—is a precursor to war!

Events of recent weeks have accelerated the resurrection of an ancient entity in Europe!

After the Anglo-Saxon nations gave thanks to their God for delivering them from the tyrannies of fascism, Nazism and imperial Japan, religion rapidly fell out of fashion. A new breed of academics—steeped in the false utopian doctrines of socialism courtesy of Mao’s little red book, flavored by the “God is dead” disciples of Nietzsche—became the “useful idiots” of powers intent on destroying the moral heart of Anglo-America.

By the 1970s they had largely succeeded. Hedonism, underpinned by a credit-based economy, replaced the Anglo-Saxon traditions of thrift and self-sacrifice for the good of all. The rise of feminism, a drug counterculture steeped in such mantras as espoused by pseudo-academic Timothy Leary—“turn on, tune in, drop out”—and the increasingly strident voices of the morally perverse via the homosexual and lesbian lobbies started to influence the minds of another generation. Capital and labor were at each other’s throats. The foreign policies of the United States and Britain lay in the tatters of confusion.

Then, in the late ’70s, along came a president, a prime minister and a pope—and together they changed the whole global scene.

An American B-grade movie star, a British grocer’s daughter, and a Polish priest combined their influence within their respective constituencies to create the catalyst that broke the hold of the Soviet Union on Eastern Europe.

Suddenly, the Berlin Wall came down. Nothing has been the same on the world scene since. Forty years of a great balance of power, within which reasonable stability and a certain level of global peace ensued, collapsed overnight on that fateful day of Nov. 9, 1989.

The Cold War was over. The U.S. strode the world like a colossus, the singular superpower to whom the whole world looked to police the globe and maintain the peace.

That was almost 19 years ago.

Look where the world is today.

What a waste!

Less than two decades following the greatest opportunity in its history, the U.S. is broke, morally corrupt at its core, seemingly rudderless in its foreign policy, the generally perceived pariah of the world, hated by all to almost the same degree as is the formerly brave and stoic little nation of Israel.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, a grand strategy for global dominance currently plays out. It’s an identical strategy to that which has powerfully impacted the Anglo-Saxons three times over the past century and a half, about which those peoples remain largely ignorant at grave risk to the future of their national sovereignty. It’s a grand strategy, the effects of which we have been warning the British and American peoples about for over 70 years.

Believe it or not, rising up yet once more in the heartland of Europe is an ancient entity that has a history of brutal bloodletting extending back over the past two millennia! For 1,000 years of that history, its economic, political and military power has been Teutonic, its spiritual influence centered in Rome.

Historians call it “the Holy Roman Empire”!

Once, Herbert W. Armstrong was a lone voice crying out in a wilderness of the confusion in international relations seeking to warn of this resurrecting phenomenon. He gained his vision of the future from inerrant Bible prophecy. Few listened as he published and broadcast a message, beginning with the years leading up to World War ii and continuing right up to his death at the brink of the collapse of the Soviet Union, warning of the final resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire.

For over half a century before these events became a current-day reality, Herbert W. Armstrong prophesied the reunification of Germany and the rise of that nation to lead a combine of European states to world-power status, under the spiritual influence of Rome. He prophesied that the collapse of the Anglo-Saxon nations would coincide with the rise of that power as a global hegemon.

During the past two decades, Gerald Flurry has followed in Herbert Armstrong’s footsteps, tenaciously warning of the great tragedy that awaits the Anglo-Saxon nations in particular for their rebellion against their God, and the ultimate tragedy that awaits this world in the wake of the final resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire.

Two recent events have dramatically underscored the reality of the prophecies of both Herbert Armstrong and Gerald Flurry—one involving Germany, the other involving the religion of Rome.

First was the dramatic coup within the Social Democrat Party (spd). It was a veritable political blitzkrieg: Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and former Vice Chancellor Franz Muntefering ousted party leader Kurt Beck; Steinmeier was propelled into the limelight as prime contender for the post of Germany’s chancellor, and Muntefering, a Steinmeier ally, returned to his former post as spd chairman. It was simply, and covertly, designed to push the pro-U.S. faction of Chancellor Angela Merkel into the political backwater, and bring the spd right-wing, pro-Russian cabal to the fore in German foreign policy.

This occurred during the process of state elections leading up to next September’s election for the German chancellorship.

The very fact that, within 24 hours of the Steinmeier-Muntefering coup, headlines appeared proposing that Merkel was being touted for a sideways “promotion” to a “senior EU post” indicated that the knives were out and Merkel’s political career within Germany was fated for a rapid end.

Added to this dramatic turn of events in German politics, two of Pope Benedict xvi’s recent tours have highlighted his papacy’s narrowing its focus onto preparing the scene for a blitzkrieg evangelizing of Europe.

During a visit to Sardinia on September 7, Benedict called for Catholic laypeople to step up their efforts in evangelizing the “the world of work, the economy [and] politics” (AsiaNews, September 7; emphasis mine throughout). That’s pretty well an all-embracing evangelizing agenda!

Rome has always been clever at carrying out its strategy of embedding Catholic laity in labor movements, government bureaucracy, the secret services and the legal profession. Now the pope is calling for those Catholics who hold positions of influence within society to heed the clarion call from Rome to saddle up for a new global crusade!

During his Sardinia speech, Benedict called for “a new generation of committed Christian laypeople capable of seeking with competency and moral rigor solutions of sustainable development” (ibid.). Those solutions, in the pope’s terms, must stem from the “cultural treasures” that the pope referred to in a more recent speech as the ancient monasteries of Catholicism embedded in Europe!

Hard on the heels of the Sardinia speech, Benedict sped to Europe’s most secular state, France, to begin garnering the wayward French nation back into Rome’s fold. In this effort, he recruited the support of France’s President Sarkozy, who currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union. The way for the pope had been prepared by influential EU parliamentary President Hans-Gert Pöttering, who visited Sarkozy concurrently. A devout German Catholic, Pöttering has previously offered a standing invitation to Pope Benedict to come to Strasbourg and personally address the European Parliament.

With his visit to France last week coinciding with the anniversary of his controversial speech given in Regensburg, Germany, last September, the key phrase within his oration to this wayward French daughter of the church, given in Paris, juxtaposed cuttingly with a statement he made about Islam a year ago.

In the Regensburg speech, the pope sent a powerful message to global Islam by quoting a 14th-century Byzantine emperor as declaring that the Prophet Muhammad brought “things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.” By contrast, during his speech in Paris, Benedict declared that “Amid the great cultural upheaval resulting from migrations of peoples and the emerging new political configurations, the monasteries were the places where the treasures of ancient culture survived.”

Get the point? Benedict contends that the European culture is rooted in the ancient traditions of Rome, protected through the ancient monastic system of the Roman Catholic Church. It is that tradition, of the universality of the ancient religion of Rome, toward which Pope Benedict was inviting France, and by inference, the whole of Europe, to return. It is that religion which, alone, throughout its perpetually resurrecting history, was able to bind the diverse nations of Europe together each time the Holy Roman Empire arose in the past to dominate Europe and the world.

What we are witnessing through these recent key events in Europe is simply the old cycle of history repeating itself, just one more time. The final resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire is increasingly, and inevitably, asserting itself in European and global politics. The political events in Europe—especially Germany—in recent weeks, most particularly since Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Georgia on August 8, overlaid with the words and actions of Pope Benedict xvi over the past year, have catapulted the final resurrection of that ancient Holy Roman Empire forward into a new aggressive phase.

You need to update your awareness of what is happening in Europe. These events are destined to affect every man, woman and child within the Anglo-Saxon nations in a way that will stagger their minds as to the swiftness of their happening and their overwhelmingly destructive power on the economies and the populations of the U.S., Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand!
