Are the Jews the only remaining survivors from the original 12 tribes of Israel?

Like numerous other columnists over the past month, Charles Krauthammer commemorated Israel’s 60th birthday by referring to its establishment as a “miraculous story of redemption and return.” But unlike every other article we have read on the same subject, Krauthammer correctly identifies the two tribes of Israel that returned to establish the Jewish state 60 years ago—Judah and Benjamin.

To introduce his piece, Krauthammer writes about a meeting between Meriwether Lewis and Dr. Benjamin Rush that took place shortly before Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis off on his famous expedition out west. Rush wanted Lewis to observe the religious practices of the Indians to see if there were any similarities with the Jewish religion. “Jefferson and Lewis,” Krauthammer wrote, “like many of their day and ours, were fascinated by the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, and thought they might be out there on the Great Plains.”

He’s right. A quick search through the New York Times archives reveals how much speculation there was during the 1800s about where the lost tribes migrated after their Assyrian captivity in the 8th century b.c. One headline from 1885 reads: “Afghans and Their Home—Are They Descendents of Israel’s Lost Tribes?” The Times wrote, “A very ingenious attempt to connect the Afghans with the 10 lost tribes of Israel was made by Sir G.H. Rose, in a pamphlet issued 30 odd years ago. The Old Testament was abundantly drawn upon to show that the tribes disappeared toward the east …” (April 19, 1885).

During the same time period, when several articles were written about the whereabouts of the lost 10 tribes, the New York Times also printed numerous articles in favor of the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. Clearly, more people back then understood that the lost 10 tribes were not Jewish.

Today, most people carelessly assume that all Israelites are Jews. So kudos to Charles Krauthammer for pointing out that the people identified as Jews today come from only two of the original 12 tribes. The only problem with his interpretation of Israel’s history is his explanation of where the lost 10 tribes went. He wrote, “Their disappearance into the mists of history since their exile from Israel in 722 b.c. is no mystery. It is the norm, the rule for every ancient people defeated, destroyed, scattered and exiled.”

The Jewish nation, he says, is the one exception. They, like the brothers from the northern 10 tribes, were defeated, removed from their homeland and “destroyed” by the Babylonians in the sixth century b.c. Yet, 70 years after their destruction, Cyrus the Great allowed about approximately 50,000 Jews to return to Jerusalem in order to rebuild Solomon’s Temple. Five centuries later, the Romans again besieged and destroyed the Jewish vassal state. According to first-century Jewish historian Josephus, Caesar instructed his general to utterly destroy Jerusalem, leaving it without inhabitant.

Yet, through two captivities, enslavements and scatterings—and despite being homeless for two millennia—the tribes of Benjamin and Judah had multiplied to about 18 million at the dawn of our modern era. Even after Adolf Hitler exterminated one third of the world’s Jewish population—in one of the worst crimes ever committed against a people in the history of human civilization—survivors of the Holocaust, backed by the United States and Britain, established the state of Israel in 1948.

Today, 60 years later, Israel is the most prosperous and powerful nation in the Middle East. That is a remarkable story of survival—no doubt about it.

What would be much more remarkable though—far-fetched, in fact—is if the other 10 tribes were systematically destroyed 2,700 years ago, resulting in their complete disappearance from the Earth.

Comparing the Numbers

When King David asked for his armies to be counted, he was told that there were 1.1 million Israelite men who were capable of bearing arms, compared to 470,000 in Judah. Counting women and children, one could conservatively estimate the total population to be around 3 million Israelites and 1.5 million Jews.

Ten generations after David’s reign, just before the northern 10 tribes went into captivity, one could safely assume that their population had grown and that Israel was still much larger than the southern nation of Judah.

With that in mind, isn’t it illogical to assume that the northern 10 tribes were destroyed or disappeared, while the much smaller nation of Judah survived three different captivities and mass exterminations to establish a Jewish state 60 years ago?

The Bible says that the Assyrians “removed Israel” out of God’s sight and carried them “away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day” (2 Kings 17:23). That biblical passage was recorded approximately 100 years after the Israelites were removed. There were still survivors, the author tells us—perhaps millions of them—dwelling in Assyria.

Where Did the Apostles Go?

Six hundred and fifty years after the author of Kings said Israelites had been uprooted from Israel and transplanted into Assyria, Jesus encountered a Canaanite woman on the coast of the Mediterranean who asked Him to have mercy on her possessed daughter, to which Christ responded, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:24). What an incredibly revealing response! The Israelites had become lost from world view during their captivity, largely because they rejected their identifying sign of Sabbath-keeping. They did not disappear. Neither were they destroyed, as Jesus plainly confirmed. Furthermore, Jesus actually said that His ministry was primarily aimed at those lost sheep!

Of course, that brief ministry was cut short when He was crucified to pay for the sins of mankind. Prior to His crucifixion, however, Jesus commissioned His 12 disciples to deliver the gospel to those same “lost” tribes of Israel. “Go not into the way of the Gentiles,” Christ told them, “but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 10:5-6). It was through the work of His faithful disciples that Jesus Christ’s God-given mission to reach the “lost sheep” of Israel was primarily fulfilled!

Have you ever wondered why, after Acts 11, most of the first-century Church history is about the Apostle Paul’s ministry to the Gentile peoples on the eastern and northern shores of the Mediterranean? Does it seem strange that most of the New Testament is composed of letters written by Paul, who was commissioned to reach the Gentiles?

What happened to the original 12 apostles? Where did they go? They went exactly where Christ told them to go—far beyond Paul’s territory, following the migration of the Assyrians and their Israelite captives, into northwestern Europe, where the Israelites had been lost from world view!

Krauthammer is right when he says that many, even to this day, are still fascinated with the subject of ancient Israel’s modern identity. What he didn’t say is that most of this fascination can be attributed to a book written by Herbert W. Armstrong—The United States and Britain in Prophecy—requested by more than 6 million people during the 20th century!

Not All Twelve Tribes of Israel are Jewish?

Some precious positive feedback

We found your website and the online book in 2005 and have read it several times as did Mum before she fell asleep. Mum really found comfort in your 'directness' approach and we would often have a laugh at some of your expressions... We truly believe that God started sending us an upload of information from the year 2005 for some reason and indeed we have so much that we can't keep up. However, isn't this also foretold in the Bible that those who have will receive more?

I am glad I ran across your blog because it gave me hope that is visible to see that there are others out there like you who believe in Gods message brought to us through Mr. Armstrong.... May God bless you abundantly and keep you safe.

After reading some of your materials I could see that you have roots in WCG under Mr. HWA.

Please continue your work of spreading the True Gospel, this is a world in dire need of it before soon to come Tribulation! ...So many of us will have to suffer and be martyrs because of this counterfeit gospel being spewed so widely. It is saddening really… Pray for those who are “Luke Warm” and those like myself. Also, please pray that we are protected or in the very least, become one of those that come out of the Tribulation repentant and protected from the last plagues just before the Day of the Lord as foretold by John in the book of Revelation.

Why You Must Watch Europe

May 26, 2008 | From theTrumpet.com
We can’t allow events in the Middle East to distract us from what’s unfolding in Europe.

Events in the Middle East dominate global headlines. There is no doubt these events threaten global peace and warrant our attention. But we must realize that there is an even greater trend we should be watching. In many ways, the Middle East is a sideshow compared to this ominous threat.

We must watch Europe now more than ever. Too many people, particularly in the global news media, are allowing circumstances in the Middle East to distract them from what is stirring in Europe. Are you aware that Europe is beginning to react strongly to events unfolding in the Middle East? It is realizing that it must rise to meet Iran and its radical Islamist henchmen.

Anyone who knows history should see how events in the Middle East will jolt Europe. Already Europe is getting more and more involved in Middle East events. European troops were mobilized in response to the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Most of the troops that moved into Lebanon to keep the peace were European: Italy sent in ground troops, Germany sent in soldiers and a naval force. These two nations largely comprise what has been known, since a.d. 554, as the Holy Roman Empire.

Europe is also beginning to play a more prominent role in the Israel-Palestinian peace process. The Jewish state is increasingly looking to Europe for assistance and direction. EU troops are policing the Gaza-Egypt border. And Israel is growing especially fond of Germany.

The Holy Roman Empire is rising out of the events unfolding in the Middle East!

As Europe steps up its political and military presence in the Middle East, the world celebrates the idea of their bringing peace to the region. People, in the news media and in general, believe European forces will protect Israel and protect Jerusalem. The Trumpet sees things differently. Why? Because the Bible reveals the opposite.

Jerusalem is going to be the main point of conflict between Europe and Iran. Historically, that city has always been the focal point. We must watch Jerusalem!

The Bible tells us that, very soon, the Europeans are going to destroy Jerusalem—if the Jews in Israel don’t listen to God's message. (You can read about these events in my booklet Jerusalem in Prophecy.)

The fact that Germany and other European nations want to become more involved in the Middle East, particularly in the Israel-Palestinian peace process, shows a dramatic shift taking place. American influence in the Middle East is shrinking, and European influence is increasing. For some time, Europe has been growing more engaged in Israel’s peace process with the Arabs.

Watch for Europe to become more involved with Israel, especially Jerusalem. This rising Holy Roman Empire has already taken over the Balkans (explained in my free booklet The Rising Beast)—and now it has its steely eyes set on Jerusalem!

Iran and its radical henchmen are bent on thrusting the Middle East into crisis. Jerusalem is surrounded by Islamist enemies. Now Europe, including Germany, is becoming a chief ally of the Jewish state. Germany is becoming a global leader and chief peacekeeper.

We must remember the history of Germany and the rest of Europe. World War ii, which Germany started, was so terrible that Western leaders from both sides of the Atlantic spoke out strongly to assure people Germany would never rise up to strike again. President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued this joint statement in 1945: "It is our inflexible purpose to destroy German militarism and Nazism, and to ensure that Germany will never again be able to disturb the peace of the world. We are determined to disarm and disband all German armed forces, break up for all time the German general staff that has repeatedly contrived the resurgence of German militarism."

Have we forgotten that history? Has France forgotten that it was invaded by Germany four times in a hundred years? Have we forgotten that Germany caused World Wars I and II? It appears we have—because the Bible says it is Germany that will start World War III!

Revelation 13 and 17 speak extensively about the beastly power that will rise out of Europe in this end time. We must watch how events in the Middle East facilitate the rise of this European superstate. Iran's pushiness and the rise of Islam are driving Germany, along with the rest of Europe, to embrace its history.

As the world falls apart—as the Middle East becomes crippled with serious crises—as American leadership declines—European leaders are seeing the need for strong action! They are recognizing problems, then looking at their own history and saying, We need to revive our roots.

That is the message Pope John Paul II brought. He worked feverishly to revive the Holy Roman Empire. Early in his pontificate, in Spain, on Nov. 9, 1982, he said, “[I]t can be said that the European identity is not understandable without Christianity and that precisely in Christianity are found those common roots by which the Continent has seen its civilization mature: its culture, its dynamism, its activity, its capacity for constructive expansion in other continents as well; in a word, all that makes up its glory.”

But what exactly are those roots? Charlemagne, the forefather of the Holy Roman Empire, waded through seas of blood to convert people to his empire and to Roman Catholicism. During the Inquisition, over 50 million innocent people were killed in the name of “Christianity!” And you can add many millions more as victims of the Holy Roman Empire. Those “origins” and “roots” and that “history” to which John Paul ii referred caused many millions of people to die!

Pope Benedict has been repeating that same message: Discover your origins, revive your roots. When he visited his native Bavaria in September 2006, according to the Christian Science Monitor, his message was, “Europe needs to rethink the thesis that secularism and economic progress go hand in hand” (Sept. 15, 2006). He is urging Europeans to reject secularism and embrace religion.

And Europeans are listening. Roman Catholicism is taking on a new life in Europe. In Germany, the decline in church attendance has stopped; in one state, the number of young churchgoers is rising.

Politicians are also supporting the pope’s movement. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is trying to insert a reference to Europe’s Christian heritage—clearly, a Catholic heritage—into the EU constitution. This is coming from the leader of a nation with more theologians in office than any other Western nation.

At the same time, Muslim boldness is stirring a new strength and vigor within the Vatican. You might remember in 2006 when Pope Benedict xvi made some comments in Germany that confronted the issue of Islam and its violent tendencies. When Muslims responded by becoming violent, many prominent Europeans got behind the pope in support of what he had said. Radical Islam wants a fight, and don’t expect the Vatican to back away!

When the pope begins to confront Islamists, the world should be alarmed. The Vatican knows its next great adversary is Islamism. This Middle Eastern power is rising and becoming a serious threat. But for the Catholic Church to confront Islam is to bring the specter of the Crusades to life once again!

We must understand the Holy Roman Empire and the Crusades to understand the Catholic passion for Jerusalem. The Catholics have a long history of spilling blood over Jerusalem.

Notice this prophecy in Daniel 11:40: “And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.”

Iran leads this “king of the south” (request our free booklet The King of the South). The Iranians are really pushing these days. That is what recent events in the Middle East have been—the war in Lebanon, the terrorist activity in the Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula and West Bank. Iran is pushing its weight around! And it will continue to push until somebody stops it.

Somebody will stop it! Note in the above scripture that the “king of the north” responds to this push from the king of the south. Even now we are seeing this king of the north, this European superpower, react to the push from the king of the south. This trend is about to rapidly intensify.

Gesenius’ Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon says the word push in Daniel 11:40 means to strike or to push with a horn; it is used of horned animals, or of a victor who prostrates nations before him. It also means to wage war. Push is a violent word.

Notice what the Bible prophesies will be this empire’s first action after it is victorious over the king of the south: “He shall enter also into the glorious land [the Holy Land, Jerusalem], and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon” (verse 41). The Holy Roman Empire will “enter” into the Holy Land. The Hebrew indicates this will be a peaceful entry—not forced. That means the Jews will probably invite them in—even as they are already doing—but then will suffer a spectacular double-cross!

Just 20 years ago, nobody could have even imagined two world powers coming out of the Middle East and Europe. But everybody should be able to see these two great powers today. Germany is once again becoming the center of a growing European superpower. It is the largest and greatest economy in Europe, and it’s now showing strong signs of emerging from its economic troubles. Germany is the number-one exporter in the world. Watch for it to increasingly dominate European economics from its position at the crossroads of the Continent.

There is no excuse for America and Britain not knowing the truth. God has been sending His message in power for over 70 years! They have rejected it repeatedly. That is why they now must suffer so intensely.

But there is good news! Finally, after God is able to get their attention, our peoples will become teachable. God promises to lead them to peace, full joy and abundance.

Latest news on Shoaib Choudhury

From Naomi Ragen:

Friends,
Here is the latest information from our Muslim friend, the courageous Bangladeshi journalist who is being hounded by the government because he refuses to give up the hope that his country and Israel may be friends.
From Shoaib Choudhury:
I have to appear in the court, on May 27 2008 at 10:00 am as usual. This month, I had to be in the court twice [one on May 8 and the other on May 27].

I did not count as to how many hundreds of hours I spent at the court room since 2003 [November 29 I was arrested].

But, one thing is for sure, such legal harrassment is causing my mental and financial constraint every month. Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi government withdrew police protection from my residence on May 5 2008 and the protection never came back, even though my brother Dr. Richard L Benkin and I were repeatedly promised by many of the officials in the government.

Law and order situation is deteriorating in Bangladesh, and members of my family are passing horrible time due to absense of police protection.

Moreover, members of notorious Rapid Action Battalion [RAB] looted cash and valuables from my office when they abducted me on March 18, 2008. Despite numerous promises from the government, the looted valuables had never been returned nor there has been any action against the culprit RAB men.

Jewish Patterns in Shakespeare's The Tempest

Few people today recognize, and, such are our times, few educators want it known that the plays of Shakespeare teach in their details, themes and story patterns the basic tenets of Judaism and the Noahide mitzvot. Let us clarify our understanding of the redemptive capabilities of these plays and how they can illuminate what those seeking a Godly way can do to discern and live the divine goodness in the Creation.

Jude Speaks To Us Today

Jude

Greeting to the Called
1 Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James,

To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ:

2 Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.
Contend for the Faith

3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
Old and New Apostates

5 But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; 7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
8 Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries. 9 Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” 10 But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. 11 Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.
Apostates Depraved and Doomed

12 These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; 13 raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
Apostates Predicted

16 These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage. 17 But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: 18 how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. 19 These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.
Maintain Your Life with God

20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
22 And on some have compassion, making a distinction; 23 but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.
Glory to God
24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling,
And to present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
25 To God our Savior,
Who alone is wise,
Be glory and majesty,
Dominion and power,
Both now and forever.
Amen.
