Europe is at a crossroads!

Greece is on the verge of collapse. This Mediterranean nation cannot pay its debts without massive restructuring.

Both French and German ministers have announced that they will not bail out their Club Med neighbor. Instead, EU monetary authorities are pushing Greece to massively slash its budget. But if Greece were to implement the severe spending cuts needed to get its deficit under control, it could easily plunge into an even deeper recession. Also, loss of government handouts has already created mass strikes and social unrest—a trend certain to get worse as the cuts become more steep.

Yet if Germany and France allow Greece to continue defying its monetary agreements, there will be little to stop other deeply indebted countries like Spain, Portugal and Ireland from also reneging on their monetary commitments. The credibility of the euro would be thrown into doubt.

All eyes are on Europe. Can the euro survive if Greece leaves or is kicked out of the monetary union? If a bailout comes, who will fund it, and at what cost?

There are no good choices. All of them will be very costly. Greece’s massive debt problems threaten the very viability of the European Union.

The disparate nations of Europe are desperately seeking a savior.

The truly remarkable thing is, this crisis was no accident. Not only was it eminently foreseeable long ago, but evidence suggests that it was deliberately planned. And its outcome promises to unfold just as its authors hoped.

What is happening in the European superstate is a mystery to most of the world. Yet while stock markets gyrate and bond investors panic, Trumpet readers know the ultimate result.

“The crisis in Greece is a forerunner of a whole rash of similar crises set to soon break out across Europe,” editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote in the February 2009 Trumpet. “They will provide the catalyst for the EU’s leading nation, Germany, to rise to the fore with solutions of its own making.”

For more than a decade, the Trumpet has warned about the rotten heart of Europe. We have specifically noted the flawed currency exchange rate mechanism and how the structure of the EU was a Trojan horse for stealthy German ambitions.

“Who will get control of this great superstate?” asked Mr. Flurry in June 2000. The battle comes down to two nations—France and Germany, he said. But it will be the nation that controls the money—Germany—that will ultimately reign supreme.

Today, events unfolding in Europe are proving that forecast uncannily accurate.

Created to Fail?

From the beginning, the euro was destined—maybe even designed—to fail. At least that is the conclusion of some analysts.

Back in 1992, the power elites in Europe enticed the hapless member nations of the EU at that time into signing up to the Maastricht Treaty on European Union. The treaty contained a vital clause creating the foundation for an economic and monetary union—EMU. This has become synonymous with the subsequent European Monetary Union, also called the EMU.

The emu was glued together by a single currency. The euro was introduced in 1999, with notes and coins entering circulation in 2002. To date 16 EU member nations have joined the EMU, sacrificing their individual national sovereign means of exchange—and in the process setting themselves on a course that would lead to the total sacrifice of their national sovereignty on the altar of the imperialist project of the European Union.

After the EU single currency system was implemented, certain voices predicted the failure of the euro. A handful 
theorized that the euro may well even have been deliberately created to fail by certain German elites. The theory was that Germany would bide its time and allow the unworkable monetary union to prevail till it reached a point of collapse and then, having wrested control of the European Central Bank (ECB) out of any competitor’s hands (read France, in particular), move in quickly and take direct control of EMU administration. Germany could then ensure that a preferred core of EU member nations would receive ECB favor, with the disfavored reduced to vassal status or worse.

Why, if the theory is correct, would Germany deliberately create an economic and monetary union that was destined, from all the tests applied by the clearest thinking observers at the time, to fail?

Unification Through Stealth

When the eurozone’s founders began working toward pan-European unity, they knew it would be virtually impossible to unite the Continent. Jean Monnet, one of the forefathers of the European Union, was well aware of the difficulty of convincing voters to willingly relinquish their national sovereignty. Monnet felt that the only way to achieve unification, without war, was through stealth. The people must not know that sovereignty has been surrendered until it is gone.

English conservative and author Adrian Hilton described Monnet’s intentions for Europe this way: “Europe’s nations should be guided towards a superstate without their people understanding what is happening. This can be accomplished by successive steps each disguised as having an economic purpose, but which will eventually and irreversibly lead to federation” (The Principality and Power of Europe; emphasis ours throughout).

As Monnet said on April 30, 1952, “The fusion [of economic functions] would compel nations to fuse their sovereignty into that of a single European state.”

Peter Thorneycroft, former chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom and Europhile, described the Monnet unification method in a 1957 Foreign Affairs article: “The idea of a united Europe is not new. It has exercised the minds of the soldiers and sometimes of the statesmen of Europe for many centuries. … Torn by war and conquest, weakened by internecine strife, Europeans have yet found the time and the capacity to leave an incomparable legacy ….

“Yet men do not live easily within the same institutional arrangements. National patriotisms are strong ….”

In an earlier booklet, Design for Europe (1947), Thorneycroft wrote: “No government dependent upon a democratic vote could possibly agree in advance to the sacrifice which any adequate plan must involve. The people must be led slowly and unconsciously into the abandonment of their traditional economic defenses, not asked, in advance ….”

Economic integration, once initiated, would become self-sustaining, it was hoped. Monnet theorized that economic interdependence would drive integration until eventually, Europe would end up with de facto political centralization and unification.

Today, Europe may be at a tipping point where economic integration finally meets political unification.

“The European experiment with a trans-sovereign currency is facing its first acid test,” wrote Euro Pacific Capital’s John Browne. “In essence, the euro was created as a lever to encourage a complete European political union rather than as a currency representing … an already unified economy” (February 10).

According to Browne, who is a former British member of Parliament and close associate of then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the euro has largely succeeded in creating the will for a federal Europe among the political classes even though European citizens have voted again and again to maintain their individual country’s sovereignty.

“Whoever controls the currency controls the government,” said economics guru Maynard Keynes. To him, that was not just a law of economics; it was a law that underwrote power politics.

Anticipated Crisis

When the euro was created, a chain of events was set in motion. For nations like Greece, a future debt crisis was almost inevitable.

By joining the eurozone, Greece traded its inflation-prone drachma for the stability of the euro. It also gained the economic borrowing clout of a superstar, even though it had the economy of a small supporting actor.

Initially, these two advantages vastly improved the standard of living for the people of Greece. They allowed corporations, individuals and government to borrow money at the low rates typical within large developed countries like Germany. The new low interest rates were more than Greece could resist. All levels of society binged on seemingly cheap money. The government, for its part, embraced a massive welfare state, also made possible by easily obtained low-interest loans.

But as lenders to Greece are beginning to remember, there was a good reason Greece paid far higher interest rates to borrow money when it was not a member of the Union. Greece has a history of borrowing too much. According to analyst John Mauldin, Greece has been in default in one way or another for 105 out of the past 200 years.

Even as luxury swiftly came to Greece, so now have the first whiffs of poverty.

With a projected budget deficit of 12.7 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product, Greece is far out of compliance with the eurozone’s mandated 3 percent maximum. With the world in recession, investors are wondering how Greece will pay its bills.

Typically when a country takes on too much debt, it contracts Argentine-disease. Known also as “quantitative easing,” countries devalue their currency by turning on the money printing presses and simply creating the currency to pay the bills. This of course upsets creditors, but at least the bills get paid. The economy also gets a short-term kick-start because a devalued currency makes exported goods less expensive; thus foreigners buy more domestic products.

Greece, however, does not have this option. Since it is locked into the euro, it does not control the printing presses. Germany does.

Analysts worry that Greece may be reaching the point where a debt spiral could bankrupt the government. What will Europe do?

It’s true that the Greece crisis will necessitate some difficult and costly decisions. But in some respects, as far as the European political class is concerned, it matters not whether Greece stays or goes. Greece is a peripheral country, immaterial to the desire for a federalist Europe. What is material is that the current crisis be exploited to its maximum—and that means that it be used to foster further integration of core Europe.

Will the Eurozone Be Pared Down?

The Telegraph’s Ambrose Evans-Pritchard wrote on January 31 that the solution to the crisis could involve a paring down of the eurozone. He noted the possibility of a bloc of nations centered on Germany leaving the eurozone and creating a new currency: the Deutsch mark 2. The rest of the eurozone countries would then be free to devalue the euro (turn on the printing presses) to pay down debts.

Although Evans-Pritchard noted that Germany is currently happy with its advantageous position within the euro, he also said there would be certain benefits to a newly created German-led bloc.

Events in Greece bear close watching, especially in light of the advent of the seventh revival of the Holy Roman Empire in Europe, which officially began on January 1 with the onset of the Lisbon Treaty.

The first major reason to watch this issue is that the Bible indicates that this final Roman imperial resurrection will be composed of 10 nations or groups of nations (as indicated in Daniel 2). Whether or not the current 27 EU nations get regrouped into new political regions remains to be seen, but the economic crisis in Greece may well provoke a vast restructuring or paring down of the European Union.

Far from heralding the end of the European unification project, the current crisis in Greece may actually signal a new beginning.

Forcing the Pace of Political Union

Back when the euro was first created, the European Commission’s top economists warned politicians that the new currency might not survive a serious crisis. They knew that because the eurozone had “no EU treasury or debt union to back it up” and a “one-size-fits-all regime of interest rates [that] caters badly to the different needs of Club Med and the German bloc,” the day would come that economic crisis would threaten the EU (Telegraph, Oct. 1, 2008).

The fathers of the euro did not dispute this. They knew European economic union was risky, but they saw it as an acceptable risk—even desirable—as a last-ditch option to force the pace of political union. As the Telegraph said, “They welcomed the idea of a ‘beneficial crisis.’” And as “ex-Commission chief Romano Prodi remarked, it would allow Brussels to break taboos and accelerate the move to a full-fledged EU economic government” (ibid.).

Mr. Flurry’s words from that February 2009 article ring out: “Berlin has been planning for this crisis before it even adopted the euro. European elites knew it would eventually come. And they will soon present a solution.”

Sure enough, in the midst of the Greek crisis, an increasing ensemble is crying for a federalized European economic government—one with not just a common currency, but one with a common debt union and power structure—kind of like a United States of America in Europe.

It is “Time for the Eurozone to Grow Up,” headlined the Wall Street Journal on February 8. There is a way out of this dilemma, it wrote. “It would require a European federal government with substantial taxing and spending power, with the ability to redistribute resources and impose fiscal discipline across the continent. In short, it would require a far greater degree of political union …. Yet the choice is now clear and inescapable.”

That is exactly the kind of talk that political elites are looking for. It is also a sentiment echoed in Europe.

“The crisis has revealed our weaknesses,” said European Union President Herman Van Rompuy in February. “Recent developments in the euro area highlight the urgent need to strengthen our economic governance.” Europe needs a powerful “economic government,” he said.

The EU’s foreign affairs chief, Catherine Ashton, agrees. More political union is needed, she said on February 6 at the Munich Security Conference. “We must mobilize all our levers of influence—political, economic, plus civil and military crisis management tools—in support of a single political strategy.”

“The days when a common EU foreign policy was regarded as mere talk are numbered,” Ashton said.

Yes, the days when the free nations of Europe charted their own destiny are indeed numbered.

Victory for Berlin

Consider the success of the euro project in the grand scheme of things. By gearing a whole continental economy to a single currency—imposing rules for membership of monetary union that it was clear no member nation could reliably and consistently fulfill—the German elites crafted a scheme designed to create a continental crisis. If they come to control the ECB (and judging by the top candidates for the presidency, which is due to change hands next year, this looks to be a done deal), they will be positioned to respond to that crisis by enacting, at their will, a totally reconstituted European monetary union.

Such a union will vest financial and economic power in the hands of a select group of nations. These core nations will act in consortium under Berlin and Rome’s direction to propel the Holy Roman imperial vision to reality. They will no longer be frustrated by having to seek a majority vote from 28 fractious, disparate EU member nations. The weaker nations will simply become slaves to the beck and call of the ecb, beholden to it and its governing authority for their economic survival—a literal fulfillment of the prophecies of Revelation 13.

Whether or not the euro fails under its present stress doesn’t change this reality: Given the likely imminent placing of a German in charge of the ECB, Germany is about to directly control the bullion hoard stashed in the vaults of the ECB and beyond. The ECB is headquartered in Frankfurt; the importance of the German elites ensuring the bank lies in Germany’s heartland will prove a vital key in securing the bank’s wealth in times of crisis. When financial crisis arises, Germany will control the EU’s singular currency and hence imperial power over the whole of the EU. It will be a case of game, set and match to Germany.

Some have even mused that, as the day of monetary crisis approaches, the German elites, having positioned themselves to seize control of the ECB, would use an appropriate global institution under EU dominance as a regulator to both control and regulate global trade in the EU’s favor.

As regular Trumpet readers know, the Bible indicates that a king will soon arise in Europe who will deceitfully gain power and force his authority on Europe. The machinations for this pan-European federalist hijacking are falling into place.

Dictating Europe’s Destiny

The second reason the Greek crisis bears close watch is that the Bible indicates that this European superpower will be dominated by Germany. If this crisis in Europe has shown anything, it is that, at least economically, Germany holds ultimate power in Europe.

Bailout or no bailout: Either way, Germany wins. If Germany and Europe bail out Greece, what will be the cost? If Germany has to ask its citizens to reduce their standard of living to subsidize Greeks, what will it ask Greece for in return? The price is sure to be steep. Conversely, if Germany were to work to remove Greece from the EU, the result would be a slimmer, economically healthier, core Europe with one less voice to dilute German political clout.

Sixty-five years after World War II, Germany is again dictating the destiny of Europe. This should startle the world.

As Britain’s Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher, warned in 1993, “You have not anchored Germany to Europe. You have anchored Europe to a newly dominant, unified Germany. In the end, my friends, you’ll find it will not work.” It is Germany’s national character to dominate, she said.

Germany has hijacked Europe. Greece knows it. Portugal and Ireland will find out next. And probably Britain soon thereafter.

The true portent of all that is happening in Europe will only be obvious to those who understand the reality of the prophetic words of that once “ambassador for world peace without portfolio,” Herbert W. Armstrong.

They are now working toward a common currency. Yet, on a purely political basis, they have been totally unable to unite. …

“This new united Europe will be, militarily and economically, as strong, or even more powerful, than either the United States or the ussr. It will be a third gigantic world power! But it will be exceedingly short-lived (Revelation 17:10, 12)—as iron and miry clay are not adhesive, and will not stick together (Daniel 2:42-43)” (Plain Truth, January 1979).

In our February edition, our editor in chief proclaimed that, as of Jan. 1, 2010, “The Holy Roman Empire Is Back!” That ought to be a call to action to those who once heard and believed Mr. Armstrong’s words. If those words ring in your ears today, then you ought to realize the time for delay in your returning to the only way of life that guarantees true freedom, safety and protection from this seventh and final resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire is up! The words we publish are a powerful warning to you in particular!

I received a call (at the Palm Youth Hostel in Jerusalem where I lived and legally worked) from a friend in the United States that "KP" sent him a copy of a letter he reportedly also sent to the Israeli authorities, claiming I was involved in some plot to blow up the mosques to stop the peace process and prepare the way for the Temple; was involved in arms smuggling (distorting my travels through the war-zone of Yugoslavia by train from Germany and visit to South Africa and Zimbabwe, as well as other adventures - thanks to a gracious inheritance from my Hoover grandparents) and that I wasn't Jewish. I told my friend the Israeli police would recognize "KP" was a crackpot and would dismiss his bizarre letter. I wasn't worried about it...

Catholic Europe endangers freedom

The Catholic roots of Europe will strangle freedom!

It appears the bloody issue of Sunday over Sabbath has raised its ugly head again, as Europe's new empire prepares to enforce SUNday! A cleverly coordinated campaign is underway to make Sunday a legal day of rest, under the pretense of promoting better health and family life ("Mum and dad belong to us on Sunday"). "Hundreds of Euro-MPs have signed an appeal to the European Commission to consider "work-free" Sundays" (Brits will be banned from working on Sundays if Brussels gets its way).  Precious voices of dissent condemn such interference, as Stephen Booth of Open Europe decries: "There is absolutely no need for the EU to be deciding what days people can work." Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Certainly Emperor Constantine would be impressed with how the Roman wolves cloak themselves in sheep's clothing!

The bitter roots of Catholic Europe will strangle freedom! Initially covert Catholic decrees imposing Sunday and such will all seem so harmless, but the thumbscrews will continue as suggestions become demands as history testifies:

Not only did Constantine enforce SUNday observance in the Roman empire, Pope Alexander III decreed at the Council of Tours in A.D. 1163: "Whereas a damnable heresy [Sabbath-keeping] has for some time lifted its head...and spread infection...concealing itself like a serpent in its folds; as soon as its followers shall have been discovered, let no man afford them refuge on his estates; neither let there be any communications with them in buying and selling..." (Rev. 13:17). People were forbidden to engage in commerce with those branded as a heretic or Judaizer!

Europe—the Hidden Superpower

Though each appears to be presently enduring crisis, Rome and Berlin continue their respective efforts to assert themselves at the helm of the rising European empire.

To really come to grips with just how the final resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire is steadily developing to global status, one has to dig deeply behind the headlines, behind the bias and the shallowness of reports in the press and mass media. It takes a long view of history and a unique handling of predictive analysis based on current events linked to history to see the European Union in its true perspective. The plain truth is that the European Union is the second-greatest power on the world scene today, destined to soon become the dominant superpower in the very near future.

Those who scoff at the idea of a resurrected Holy Roman Empire under the domination of Rome and Berlin simply reflect a shallow perspective of history as it is attached to ongoing current world events. They lack the understanding of the modern-day identity of nations which from ancient times were prophesied to fulfill predominant roles in major world events today. Thus they are simply unable to rise above shallow reactions to world events and find the confidence with which the Trumpet forecasts the future outcome of such events quite disconcerting.

Yet, our rejoinder to the scoffers is as simple as that which Jesus Christ gave to those who doubted Him. Just believe our works! It is only a matter of time before you will witness, live through and have to endure the results of the great world events portrayed in the prophecies of your Bible.

Throughout the previous six resurrections of the Roman Empire, each of those imperial revivals, dating from the time of Justinian’s restoration in A.D. 554, was only made possible by the cooperation of two traditionally competing entities—the church and the state. Though, from time to time, one predominated over the other in a perpetual vying for dominant power, it was only by the two cooperating with each other in their respective imperial aims that the Roman Empire was able to perpetuate itself through various revivals throughout the past two millennia.

Under the influence of the Vatican, the empire became known from the time of Charlemagne—crowned emperor in A.D. 800—as the “Holy” Roman Empire. Then under Emperor Maximilian, from 1510 on the empire was known as “the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.” This title attested to the political, military and economic power of the German state in union with the spiritual influence of the Vatican as being the two predominant forces conjoined to hold the empire together.

Tracking forward to that which our editor in chief has identified as the seventh and latest resurrection of this ancient imperial entity, it is already apparent to legitimate commentators that the European Union is in fact the second-greatest power on the world scene today, next to a United States in very obvious and increasingly rapid decline.

One of the most incisive and accurate views of Europe (albeit unfashionable in foreign-policy circles) is that of Andrew Moravcsik, professor of politics and international affairs at Princeton University. In an interview published by Global Europe, Sept. 14, 2009, Moravcsik stated, “Europe, singly and collectively, is the most underrated actor in world politics today. … In fact, the world is bipolar. Europe and the U.S. are the only two global superpowers. This will remain true for the foreseeable future. Indeed, European power is rising. … It is the most ambitious and successful international organization of all time, pioneering institutional practices far in advance of anything elsewhere. … European nations, singly and collectively, are the only other states in the world today, besides the U.S., to exert global influence across the full spectrum from ‘hard’ to ‘soft’ power.”

Students of international relations recognize that it is in the military sphere that both the imperial prestige and the potential for the projection of imperial initiatives of any world power come to the fore. In this respect, Moravcsik has a firm grasp on the realities. In the same interview, he maintained that “Europe is comfortably established as the world’s ‘second’ military power, with 50,000-100,000 combat troops active throughout the globe over most of the past two decades. … In nuclear power, air power, weapons production, or naval power as well, no one except the U.S. comes close to European power projection capability” (emphasis mine).

This is exactly the position that the Trumpet has taken on Europe over the past two decades. Check our archive to verify that. Until recently, few have acknowledged the reality of European power. The chattering classes have been busy promoting headlines touting the rise of such powers as China and India, contrasting this with their shallow view of Europe as a spent geopolitical force. Meanwhile the elites who guide the development of the European Union have been content to let the world be fooled by such spurious headlines. The world press and media have done a great service to the European imperialists by diverting the attention of the public significantly away from the reality of their ongoing engagement in promoting their vision of a resurrection of European power under the aegis of Rome and Berlin.

The biggest story emanating from Rome today is, in reality, not the revelations of the behavior of pedophile priests. It is the largely unpublicized fact of the powerful influence of the Vatican in every single institution of note that comprises the European Union. The biggest story emanating from Berlin today is not the constant crises faced by Angela Merkel’s failing coalition. It is how the German power elites manage each crisis to the advantage of the promotion of Germanic imperial power.

The power of Vatican influence in the EU was recently portrayed by an EU Commission quietly moving to institutionalize Sunday as the mandatory day of worship across the whole EU spectrum. Germany has already mandated Sunday as that nation’s national day of rest and worship. It is now only a matter of time before the powerful Catholic elites force that mandate onto all member nations of the European Union. When that has been achieved, and Rome’s official day of worship enshrined in European law, the penalties for non-compliance will soon be enacted on those who refuse to bow to Rome. The results are prophesied in Revelation 13 in your Bible.

In a more recent article published in the March 2010 edition of Current History, Professor Moravcsik dates Europe’s rise to power from 1989. Why that particular year? On Nov. 11, 1989, the Berlin Wall collapsed and Germany, divided since defeat in World War ii, united to quickly become the EU’s leading political force. Moravcsik states that “Since 1989, Europe’s ‘power of attraction’ has helped stabilize the polities and economies of over a dozen neighboring countries.” It is more than coincidence that this “stabilization” happens to coincide with Germany’s post-Soviet rise to power in Europe.

A feature article in the March 11 edition of the Economist stated that Germany “has spent the past decade smashing its own taboos. In 1999 it sent its armed forces into battle for the first time since the Second World War … to protect Kosovo from Yugoslavia.” What the article does not state is that it was Germany and the Vatican’s deliberate challenge to the balance of power in the Balkans at that time—by their recognition of Croatia and Slovenia as sovereign nation states separate to greater Yugoslavia—that started the Balkan wars. This invited German participation in the subsequent Balkan conflict under the NATO umbrella. The upshot is that Germany has now announced that its occupation force in Kosovo will not be leaving!

German nationalism enjoyed a convenient and seemingly benign revival during the nation’s hosting of the football World Cup in 2006. The German flag was paraded openly and prolifically during that tournament demonstrating a great revival in national patriotism and pride. The Economist noted that “Germany now defends its national interests more frankly, especially in Europe.” To those with a decent memory of 20th-century history, this presents a degree of concern, for, as the Economist noted, “a more self-confident Germany would also be a more selfish one.” That has recently been demonstrated by Germany’s approach to the Greek financial crisis.

Noting that “Germany’s most popular politician is Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, the aristocratic defense minister,” the Economist notes that “few people doubt that Germany’s destiny lies within it. National pride is partly linked to a sense of international duty.”

What is the German perception of its “international duty”? The Economist makes a fatal mistake in its answer to that question by declaring that “Germany’s friends no longer worry much that pride will ever become hubris again.” That is a classic Anglo-Saxon pacifistically naive assumption which denies the realities of history. It denies the very nature of German history from the time that Bismarck united Germany into a single nation which soon became a singular military power. The results were the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, less than half a century later the First World War, and less than a quarter century following that, the Second World War. There followed 44 years of a divided Germany, with no outbreak of war on the Continent. Then within two years of the reunification of Germany in 1990, the newly united nation, supported by the Vatican, triggered conflict in the Balkan Peninsula.

Can we not get the point—the true lesson of history here? Germany united is a danger to peace in Europe! In fact, Germany united at the helm of a superpower now only second in global power projection to the United States is a threat to world peace!

That Germany is the powerhouse of Europe economically, financially, industrially and militarily is an undeniable fact. Professor Moravcsik states the unvarnished truth that “In trade and investment affairs, Europe is a global economic superpower larger that the United States and far ahead of countries such as China and India” (Current History, op. cit.). By simple extrapolation, that places Germany, as Europe’s leader in all these spheres, at the very forefront of global powers.

Moravcsik adds, “Taken together with its military activities, Europe’s civilian capabilities, economic importance, and political attractiveness render it a full-spectrum power, wielding a wide range of instruments for regional and global influence.” Once again, Europe’s leading power by far, Germany, is at the forefront in demonstrating these capabilities.

Yet Andrew Moravcsik is sufficiently astute as to detect the near absolute blindness of foreign-policy exponents in Washington in not even beginning to recognize the dangers posed by the new European superpower. He notes that “in Washington, Europe is still widely viewed as a declining region, barely able to take care of its own geopolitical interests, and increasingly irrelevant …. This is a failure to learn not simply from history, but from international relations theory.”

Washington will soon rue its failure to learn the lesson of history and the lessons of the very theory of international relations taught at its institutions of higher learning. In the meantime, as the gullible Western press and mass media divert the public’s attention to the spurious, the banal and the salacious, Rome and Berlin rise as the powers of the future soon to put paid to the views of the naive and the ignorant who view Europe simply as a spent force. Nothing could be farther from the truth!

The Ottawa Citizen reports - Former general speaks out about the war he can’t forget

Maj.-Gen. Lewis MacKenzie is once again making headlines in Sarajevo, where, 18 years ago, he led a United Nations peacekeeping operation that attempted to keep Bosnian Muslims and Serbs from killing each other.

While MacKenzie blamed Muslims for killing Muslims he also considered Serbian shelling of Sarajevo a war crime. But his condemnation was mostly directed at the US:

“There’s more than enough blame to go around for all sides,” he said, adding that if he was called to testify in the Karadzic case, he would not hesitate to lay blame at the former Bosnian leader’s feet. “Of the most serious accusations against Karadzic, I do consider the use of heavy artillery against civilian targets in Sarajevo … to strike fear into the heart of the population to be a war crime.”

But MacKenzie suggested that if fault lies anywhere for sparking Bosnia’s descent into civil war, it lies with the United States.

In 1992, under the auspices of the European Community, the Bosnian Muslims, Serbs and Croats signed a peace agreement, the Lisbon Agreement, in which Bosnia would be carved into ethnic cantons. But according to some accounts, former U.S. ambassador Warren Zimmermann met the Bosnian Muslim president Alija Izetbegovic and told him that if he withdrew from the agreement and unilaterally declared independence, the United States would support him. In effect, Izetbegovic was encouraged to think he would be establishing the first Muslim nation in the heart of Europe.

However, as far as the Bosnian Serbs were concerned, they weren’t going to be ruled by Muslims, who, the Serbs believed, were intent on creating an Islamic fundamentalist state. War was the only alternative once the Bosnian Muslims withdrew from the Lisbon Agreement.

I believe that most Germans are merely naive or ordinary citizens (like this country), but that the powers that be behind the scenes, the real rulers of Germany, are intent on misleading and manipulating the German army and people again to form their final and Fourth Reich, just as Bible prophecy warns.

Growing evidence of this troubling trend was clearly manifest in the Balkans, where Germany led the assault against our faithful WWII allies, the Serbs, and raped and destroyed Yugoslavia and slaughtered the Orthodox, all as groundwork for their unholy Roman Empire of the German Nation.

How did Germany do this when the German constitution forbids it? The United States were useful idiots for Germany and the bloody Vatican under our shameful president, Bill Clinton, and helped to do their dirty work for them in lockstep with NATO (the same NATO/UN/EU forces about to be used and abused in the Middle East, wolves in sheep's clothing, "peacekeepers" with their evil eye on Jerusalem, especially the Temple Mount).

By foolishly aiding and abetting German hegemony throughout Europe, we are actually helping to create the Frankenstein Monster that will destroy us! Margaret Thatcher couldn't have been more right: "You have not anchored Germany to Europe; you have anchored Europe to a newly dominant, unified Germany. In the end, my friends, you’ll find it will not work" (The Downing Street Years). - Is Germany in Danger of Backsliding?

Did Christ Rise on Easter?

Consider the one sign proving His messiahship.

Traditional Christianity has long believed that Christ was buried on the afternoon of Good Friday and resurrected early Sunday morning—one day and two nights later—even though this belief cuts in half the time frame Christ established as proof of His messiahship: “For as [Jonah] was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:40).

Besides that, the Bible nowhere mentions “Good Friday” or “Easter” (Acts 12:4 is a mistranslation). What it does say is that Jesus Christ was crucified on Passover (Matthew 26:2).

In ancient Israel, God’s people observed Passover by killing lambs and smearing blood over their doorposts (read Exodus 12). God then passed over each house where the blood was applied, sparing that household from death. All this was only a type of “Christ our Passover,” as it says in 1 Corinthians 5:7. Today, it is Christ’s shed blood that spares the life of a truly repentant Christian.

Jesus Christ died in A.D. 31. The Passover that year fell on Wednesday, April 25 (not Friday). Because God’s days begin and end at sunset, the actual Passover ceremony that Jesus observed with His disciples occurred Tuesday night—the beginning of the 14th day of the first month on the Hebrew calendar. On Tuesday afternoon, the disciples had asked Jesus about where to make preparations for the service (Matthew 26:17). That night, during the ceremony, Jesus changed the symbols, explaining that He was now that Passover sacrifice (Matthew 26:26-28).

After that Passover service, they went out into the Mount of Olives (verse 30). Christ spent most of the night praying while His disciples slept (verses 36-45). Early Wednesday morning, still on the 14th day of the first month, Judas came with the multitude to arrest Christ (verses 47-50). The crucifixion occurred later that same day.

At the “ninth hour” of the 14th, Jesus cried out (Matthew 27:46-50; Mark 15:34-37; Luke 23:44-46). This would have been at 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. That night, at sunset, marked the beginning of the first day of Unleavened Bread—one of God’s holy days, as outlined in Leviticus 23 (see also Numbers 28:16-17).

The weekly Sabbath, of course, is on Saturday. But the first day of Unleavened Bread was the first of seven annual sabbaths instituted by God. Since most people do not observe God’s holy days today, they do not know that the Bible also refers to these days as sabbaths (see Leviticus 16:31; 23:24, 26-32, 39).

Now follow this course of events closely. In John 19:30, Jesus bowed His head and said, “It is finished.” Notice the very next verse: “The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away” (verse 31). Here is where so many scholars jump the track. They assume that because the day of Christ’s crucifixion is referred to as “the preparation” prior to “the sabbath” (Matthew 27:62; Mark 15:42; Luke 23:54) that it must have been on Friday. But as John points out, the preparation day was actually before a sabbath that was a “high day”—an annual holy day.

John 19:32-42 explain what happened between Christ’s death and His burial. Notice especially verse 42: “There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.” They buried Him late Wednesday afternoon, before sunset, because, according to Jewish customs, all dead bodies had to be buried before the Sabbath, whether weekly or annual. So Christ died on the afternoon of the 14th at 3 p.m. He was buried later that afternoon before sunset. From that point, all we have to do is count three days and three nights to know when He was resurrected.

But first, let us go back to the Gospel account in Matthew to continue following the course of events. “Now the next day [after the Passover], that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again” (Matthew 27:62-63). Even these deceived Jews knew what Christ said! After three days and three nights—not one day and two nights—“I will rise again”!

So Pilate set a watch on the sepulcher for three days and nights. The story continues in the first verse of the next chapter. “In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre” (Matthew 28:1). Here again is where so many trip up—mainly because of a poor translation. The King James, along with just about every other Bible version, translates the first part of this verse, “In the end of the sabbath” or “after the sabbath.” But if you study the Greek text, you learn that the word for sabbath is actually plural! “After the sabbaths,” it should read.

Why is this significant? Jesus, remember, was crucified on a Wednesday afternoon and buried later that evening, before sunset. The next day, Thursday, was an annual sabbath. The day after that, was preparation day for the regular weekly Sabbath. The reason Matthew refers to sabbaths, plural, is because there were two sabbaths that week! When Matthew says Mary came early Sunday morning, before dawn, after one of the sabbaths, he is referring to the weekly Sabbath.

There is one more sequence of events that provides additional support for the 72-hour time frame. Mark 16:1 says Mary Magdalene and her companions bought spices “when the sabbath was past.” They were planning to prepare these ointments and spices so that they might anoint the body of Jesus. Yet Luke 23:56 says they prepared these spices and then rested on the weekly Sabbath day. Compare these two texts carefully.

Christ inspired four different Gospel accounts to be written so that all the important details of His life might be canonized. Mark said these women bought the spices after the sabbath was past. Luke said they prepared the spices before the Sabbath arrived. Those who hold to the Good Friday-Easter belief must conclude that these verses are a glaring contradiction. They are not! They complement each other perfectly, if you understand that there were two sabbaths that week. The women bought the spices on Friday, after the annual sabbath on Thursday. They prepared the spices that same day, before the weekly Sabbath, and then rested on the Sabbath according to God’s command.

When Mary entered the tomb early Sunday morning, before sunrise, [an angel] exclaimed, “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay” (Matthew 28:6). Yes indeed! He had already risen—the day before, just prior to sunset at the end of the weekly Sabbath. His death, burial and resurrection happened precisely the way He prophesied it would happen.

Why does it matter? Because Jesus Christ staked His claim to being your Savior on the fact that He would remain in the grave for three full days and nights. •

Church of God minister Arlen Berkey, in "The Work of God in the Laodicean Era," makes a statement nobody in God's Church would disagree with: "The whole world will soon know about the two witnesses. They will not be welcome by this world."


The Work of God Must Go Forward!
The Work of God must go forward. The only work that's left to do now is focus on the NATIONAL LEVEL. We must get out God's ultimatum and fast! Europe is on the rise and Jerusalem is getting international attention (Zech. 14:2). Soon God's two witnesses will rise and shine in a world of darkness (Isa. 60:1-2). God's about to restore His lamp to the Middle East! (Rev. 11:3; 1 Kgs. 11:36; Amos 9:11; Zech. 12:8).
